-I would bet that they have those for a North Hollywood-type incident rather than regular patrol work.
-Surplus 30-.06 AP is readily available and I think defeats all but level IV armor.
-Coupled with a semi-auto action with a fast reload the Garand would be a great choice for such a situation.
-Or they may be a very rural deptartment and a long-range rifle is appropriate.
-Either way it's Good Stuff

A local PD around here has M14s in their cruisers. The Fun Switch, however, is blocked (I'm pretty sure). Still, that is one heck of a patrol rifle. I wouldn't balk at an M1 Garand, either.

Can anyone tell what pistol they are carrying?

It looks almost like a compact double stack third gen. S&W, based on the mag well around the mag visible in the standing position photo and the mag extension visible in the last photo.

Here the WHP and F&G have M-14s.

Don't think the early politicians had the M1A in mind at the time, but being that this is the "Equality State" there are more than a few out here for eventualities.

As I remember, Claude Dallas' original arrest was made when a deputy sheriff put a few rounds from a Garand through--through, not just into--his pickup.

Personally I divested myself of a nice CAR-15 and all my .223 paraphenalia about fifteen years ago. A good .30 cal. gas gun is just getting going when the .223 is out of steam (not to mention having lost its battle with the constant wind).

Geeze I love that rifle, still waiting for mine to be shipped from CMP.

Pretty sure the ND HP has surplus M14's. And, I think the Morton County Sheriff's Dept. (ND) had a deputy loose a surplus M14 a few years ago! It was returned case and all.........

I will be the first responsible one to say that the .30-06 is an EXTREMELY POOR CHOICE for a civilian law enforcement rifle!!!

.30cal rounds will always have a tremendous over-penetration problem especially when compared to the .223's tendency to fragment in flesh and/or building materials. .30cal is very likely to go through the perp, through the wall behind him, and through three or four bystanders. Even most soft-point .30cal rounds still carry absolutely devistating energy and sectional-density and thus over-penetrate.

This will always present a hazard when given the bounds of civilian service. The M14, M1 Garand, FAL, etc. are all generally POOR choices for a partol or home-defense rifle.

Bottom line: A firearm using the .223 cartridge is hardly a toy, but it's combination of speed, penetration, and fragmentation limiting OVER-penetration, render it a far far superior choice for CIVILIAN use of all sorts.
