I just purchased a Remington 700 thats been pretty well built up. B&C Medalist Tactical stock, Timney trigger, Leupold VX2 6-18x, Talley rings/bases, fully bedded, etc. 13lb rifle as equipped, its a beast.

The big question is: Who made the barrel? No factory markings anywhere, even under the stock, only the caliber (.308win). .920 diameter at the muzzle, continuous (slight) taper from the chamber to the tip. Nice recessed crown. I dont think its stainless because it takes cold blue. I'm stumped. Anyone have any ideas?

M24 contour, very nice. Pretty hard to guess though.

Edit: Probably an MTU at .93 muzzle. Unless that was a typo. Do a search for who will cut MTU contours, though I'm sure there's plenty of outfits that do.

is it traditional rifling? If its 5r, or ratchet riflign, we could probably help narrow it down to those few manufacturers.

My shilen didnt have anything marking it as a shilen,

Slug the bore with a 31 caliber lead ball then use a calibrated mic to measure the bore's groove diameter on the ball.

If it's .3078" or smaller and the ball pushes through the bore with even resistance, it's a quality match grade barrel. Otherwise, probably not.

How many rounds through the barrel?

No idea. I did get to go out and shoot it a little though. Impromptu at 50 yards, rested on my porch railing I produced the 2 following 5 shot groups:

1.36" with ZQI 150gr FMJ....YUCK!....

.68" :D with Freedom Munitions 150gr FMJ Reman... Thats better. Any rifle that will shoot about MOA with cheap FMJ makes me quite happy.

Now I need to try a decent rest/shooting position and some better ammo.:D

Should like you got a good deal, and by the looks of your impromptu first run, maybe a screaming great deal.

Hmm... Building it new...

Leup VX-2 6-18x40mm AO = $500
B&C Medalist Light Tactical = $280
Timney Flat Trigger = ~$135
Rem 700 action w/ bottom metal (or SPS donor)= $600
Whatever Custom Barrel & installation = ~$500
All in for a lot of money, but custom work and used depreciation knocks a big ol' hole in all of the above - barrel, stock, and trigger basically go for free, optic gets nearly cut in half, and the rifle itself takes a $150-200 hit... Market on it should be around $850-1000...

Hopefully it does better than 1.3MOA for you though once you get some more time with it (that 2.7MOA group is a crying shame for any 700). $650 is a great deal if it shoots, not so much if it doesn't. Wonder if it went so cheap because the barrel is shot out? On the other hand, getting a new tube spun on would still have you under $1200, which would still be a decent deal, assuming you like the Medalist LT stock.

Its just the ZQI ammo. ZQI manages about 4-5moa from my AR-10. Its not accurate, but its good reliable gravel pit ammo.

The barrel looks new inside, sharp, crisp, clean. I was also resting the bipod on my deck railing, while crouching...;)

This is a retirement area, guns dont tend to get used very much and when the old folks pass on, their Cali import kids fire sale their guns off to the local shops. Kinda sad really.:(

ZQI .308 is good for shooting in the air during celebrations of various pagan holidays as 1 MOA of sky is about the most you can expect of it, in my experience.

Haha so true. Russian steel cased Brown Bear is more accurate. Too bad I stocked up on over 1,000rds of ZQI .308 when pickin's were slim...:(

Your post above said the Freedom Munitions was a 0.64" group at 50yrds off of the back porch, that's 1.3MOA. Same post the ZQI stuff was 1.36" - so 2.7MOA... Not that the Freedom stuff is top shelf, but it's not the ZQI stuff either.

So again, I hope it shoots better than 1.3MOA with SOMETHING.

I'm admittedly a 2moa shooter, thats why I'm pleased by a 1.3moa group with bulk ammo. Hoping to use this rifle to improve my skill.;) I'll have to lock this rifle in my Lead Sled and see what the RIFLE can do, not the shaky hand behind the trigger.
