ID This Muzzle device on #4 Mk 1?

A friend of mine showed me this #4 mk 1 that (besides being horribly bubba'd) had a muzzle device that was unfamiliar. Can anyone here ID it?

Can you provide a clearer picture of the attachment? The only thing I can think of is some sort of muzzle break.

EDIT - It looks like the muzzle has been turned down to a smaller diameter in the 2nd pic. Has it been threaded? If so, perhaps it's some sort of thread protector?
 
maybe just a rubber piece intended to help protect the crown from damage in case to bump the muzzle on something, but that can be left on while firing (it does appear to have a hole in it for that)?

just a guess. No idea what it really is, and if it's an original peice of equipment, or a new(er) aftermarket think.
 
Muzzle brake circa mid-1960s.
I believe it to be the Herter's Recoil Eliminator, a Target Model with the big outer sleeve to redirect the port blast and keep it from being so loud.
 
Yes, it says "Herters Pat pend" on it. It is made of blued steel. Was this the entire device or was there more to it?
