There has been some speculation (true or false) that it is the burning propellant that causes throat erosion and not the bullets!

Speculation? I think it's well established that throat erosion is primarily due to hot gasses (plasma).

I'm always curious about what and where a fella is gonna hunt that it makes a lot of difference between a basic .308 and a .300 WinMag. I deliberately set up a good rig for what I figured was a good 500-yard rifle, in wide-open see-forever country. I killed one buck at 450, and one at 350, but pretty much all the rest were inside of 200 yards. My last muley was no more than 25 or 30 yards; I was halfway ashamed of using a rifle at all.
