I have 2 "go-to" home defense guns . . . a S&W 627 8-shot .357 magnum and a Wilson CQB 1911 .45 ACP. They're in different parts of my home and accessible quickly. Both are guns I shoot a lot (and extremely well), both have also been 100% reliable.
A home-defense gun needs to be handy, like any defensive gun.
I've thought long and hard about "bump in the night" or "violent pounding on my door" scenarios at night, and concluded that a handgun is the best weapon to grab in such a situation because they tend to be near, and also easy to conceal, should the situation turn out to be nothing of importance.
Knowing that I'll need to defend my home, I'd certainly rather have a shotgun. In my situation, however, a shotgun would be locked in a safe and not the first thing I'd grab.
My second instinct is to choose the pistols I love to shoot and they are 1911s and BHPs. I enjoy the accuracy and power of the 1911s and there is no handgun I shoot better and faster than the BHP.
Of the pistols you have listed, I would select the Sig 226 or a 228 or a 229 in 9mm. Personally for a house gun, I prefer a double action revolver in 38 Special or 357 Magnum. My night stand gun is a 4" Smith & Wesson Model 10 .38 loaded with 158 grain LSWCHP +P.
I like the revolver for the simplicity of its manual of arms. I just have to pick it up and squeeze the trigger. I also like the fact that there are no magazine springs, or any other springs for that matter under tension as it sits on my night stand.
Well, of the ones you listed for range and home defense, I'd choose either the Glock 17 or the Browning High Power....if you reloaded, I'd pick the BHP to use lead bullets in, otherwise, the Glock. Then again, if you reloaded, I'd recommend a good 1911. All depends on how much you're gonna shoot and if you're gonna reload. If just factory ammo is gonna be used - Glock 17, you'll never wear it out.
