Hi,

We have recently purchased a side by side shotgun with a boxlock.
It says it is a "sniper".
We have had a look at the proof marks and it seems this is a Spanish shotgun however the serial number which begins with PG does not match up with the Spanish serial number format.

I have attached some photos of the shotgun.

Any assistance in identifying the manufacturer and age of the shotgun would be greatly appreciated!

Need a picture of the receiver water table - the part of the receiver under the barrels. P G could be Pedro Gorosabel, a quality maker that supplied many guns for the British trade up through the late 80s, but the gun doesn't reflect PG style, usually highly engrave coin finished side plate guns. The fact that there is a period betwen the P and G could mean the P is the date code for 1945 and the serial number is G73386.

Could you identify the two letters inside the diamond on the bottom of the right hand barrel inside the 4 stars? That should be the maker's mark.

That "Gmos" should mean something, but I come up blank.

Water table photo and the letters inside the diamond please.

Is this pic any help?

If the shotgun is made by Pedro Gorosabel - do you know what age it would be with that serial number?
I don't have a better photo of the water table, will have when I pick up the gun when the permit comes through

It seems unlikely that's a Pedro Gorosabel given its styling. Much more likely that P is the date code, making it date from 1945. Once you pick it up, we can decode the water table. Enjoy!

The 'stars' on the bottom of the barrel proper are choke indication, and most likely Spanish. Two stars is Full, four is IC. the 12-70 is 12 ga. 70mm (2 3/4") chamber.

Found this Pedro Gorosabel that has a very similar looking receiver, albeit it somewhat more engraved. Retailing for GBP 265 in the UK.

And I can confirm that you indeed have a Pedro Gorosabel, Sabel Game 12 bore! Congratulations. The Greener crossbolt is a nice plus. Bushed firing pins as well. And looking at the barrel flats again, there does seem to be a clear "R" among the proof marks, which would be 1947. That's a nice gun.
