I recently picked up a Mosin Nagant ex-Dragoon 91/30. It's a 1928 Izhevsk... Here is the original thread: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=232696 I say in that thread that it's a '27, but it's really a '28.

I have noticed quite a few markings on the rifle in different places. I've taken a number of pictures, and I have uploaded some that are fairly visible.

On the buttstock, there are:
a circled "Я"
a circled "Н"
a circled "М"
a circled "Ш"
a circled "Л"
an "H"
a square with a diagonal line through it (rearsenal mark)
a rectangle with "ДП" in it
two large "Б"s
a large "З"
a triangle with a "1" in it
and a "И" with the left side extending above it into a cross (or descending below, depending on how you look at it).

On the bottom of the stock, in front of the magazine (towards the muzzle), there is a stamped "Ф".

On the bolt, there is a "T" on the knob, a "TK"? in a circle on the bolt body, and an "X" in a diamond and a "И" in a circle on it. (there are a few other light marks I can't really make out)

Underneath the receiver, there is "ДЗ" stamped in it (right below the front screw hole). "УЕ" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel, below the sight block. And there is a "P" on the front sight.

There are a few other stamps, but I can't really make them out.

I've looked on 7.62x54r.net, and recognized the provisional black powder proof, the point of aim proof, and the accuracy proof. The ones I mentioned above and what is pictured, I'm not really sure of... Anyone recognize any?

Nothing?

I'm guessing the "TK" (or whatever it is) mark on the bolt body is a quality control mark.

ya. from my understanding trying to descern most markings on a nagant is like trying to read bathroom graffiti. it coulda been put on there at anytime, by any one for almost any reason.

There are many, many marks on Mosins that no one has any idea about. I'd imagine that they are, variously, process competion stamps (inletting and shaping the stock, etc) and... I dunno.

My working theory is that they had one guy in each factory whose job it was to get totally plastered, take every stamp they had in the place and bonk the rifle with it at least once. Seems to be holding true so far...

-- TN, whose Mosins have more markings on them than the guy working the tattoo parlor

Triangle 1 is the East German mark. Does the same mark appear on the metal?

The "N" looks a bit like one of the Austrian stock markings, but it's really hard to tell where it is from your photo.

You might post over on the collector's forum for more input. I've had several old Soviet Mosins that have ten or more random stamps thwapped into them, though usually on the underside of the barrel shank. When it comes to single Cyrillic letters, I sometimes suspect they were just testing their stamps or having too much Vodka. But if yours did end up in the DDR there may be a number of interesting stamps on it.

Post some overall pics when you get a chance so we can have a look at it.

No one can identify MOST of the markings on my M38.

Maybe someday someone will meet an elderly Russian ex-armorer, and pick his brain for the various markings. Until then, your guess is as good as anyone else...
