So I sit here, bored and thinking of hypothetical what-if situations to fulfill with rifles. What better place to play such games than this forum, eh?

I've been thinking about the various magnum rifle rounds the past couple of days. I need another hunting rifle like I need another hole in my head, to use the old cliche, but it doesn't stop one from thinking.

The proposed usage would be as a longer range deer/antelope rifle and possibly as an elk gun if I ever get to go elk hunting. But like most of my firearms, it would be spending 99% of its shooting time at the range, trying to drill tight little knots at whatever range I picked to shoot at or exploding various milk jugs, pumpkins and whatever gourds or other innocent fruit ended up becoming a target of my fancy. :)

I've also always had a fascination with the Weatherby Mark V rifles. They look cool to me and the few I've handled fit me like a glove and just feel right. The Monte-Carlo stock snugs into my shoulder and puts the cheekpiece at a just-comfortable height. Bliss.

So basically, what caliber and rifle would the forum recommend for a once-in-a-lifetime use-it-till-I-die hunting rifle?

As an addendum: I already own a Remington M700 Mountain Rifle in .260 Remington with a Leupold VX-I scope, so the proposed fantasy rig doesn't need to be an ultra-lightweight climbing/hiking gun.

Thanks to all who are also idle and play along.

if elk is a real possibility, then a remington 700 in 7 rum, or a 7 rsaum in a model 7.

if elk really isn't likely, then i really don't think you could beat a 25 rsaum in a model 7. being a wildcat, it is a custom proposition, but i really think that would be the ultimate deer and antelope whacker. followed by: 25-284, 257 wby, 25 wsm (not the wussified wssm), 25-06, and of course, the 7 rem mag.

300 or 340 Weatherby mag.

I'm also fond of Weatherby rifles. I love the way they look and handle. If that is the road you wish to travel then I would suggest the 300 Wby mag. 30 caliber rifles are great elk and deer rifles and the 300 wby can definately reach out and touch something. I'd also have to agree with dakotasin about the RUM either in 7mm or 300. Although when you get to the RUM or Wby 30-378 cartridge size then you enter the barrel burnin' realm. The 300 Wby cartridge is by no means barrel friendly either but that's what comes with high velocity and long range. Winchester's WSMs are also great. If it were me, I'd stick with the 300 or 340 Wby Mark V.

I confess, the .257 Weatherby Magnum looks like quite a hot rod. I think it would be fun to have and shoot. Of course, then I'd have excuses to come up with other rifles as well.

Actually, I bet that .257 in something like a Mark V Ultralight or similar would be one heck of a rifle. A bit much for the brush here in New England however. The phrase "bullet blowup" comes to mind.

longer range deer/antelope rifle

Sounds like a job for the NEF 26"-barreled rifle in .25-'06 Rem

Especially since you said most of the time at the range - much much less recoil than some of the other choices mentioned.

Or for that matter, a good turnbolt - but the .25-06 round is ideal for what you describe. But if it's gonna do elk also, then I'd swith it to .270, .280, .308, or .30-06. Note the the .25-06 and the .280 rem are the two Handi calibers that come with the long 26" bbl, if you like the single shot idea. Word is the .25-06 is typically very accurate.
