My buddy is considering trying out an IDPA league. He doesn't want to spend any money on equipment unless he likes it. The question of the day:

Can he get by initially with the "XD Gear" holster that came with his XD 45?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Dave

In fact the most common holster, at least at all the matches I've been to, will be a "plastic" one. The XD also came with a mag holder, he'll need that also. Two mags will generally be enough, but three is usually better. Have fun and remember it is a sport, winning isn't everything.

We had a new IDPA shooters' orientation Tuesday evening. There were several XDs with the included plastic holster and mag carrier. All I can say is that they are better than nothing, even better than nylon, but if your guy stays with it, he will eventually want something nicer.

Thanks guys! I think he'd easily buy a better holster if he decides he likes it. (Which I know he will. :) ) Money is tight for him right now so he doesn't want to spend the $ until he's actually seen whether he likes it or not though.

Regards,
Dave

Check the rules at IDPA.com - - just for general info b/c the club matches are generally informal and newbies are accomodated in good fashion to assure a positive experience.

Also, youtube has some clips.

I've never needed more than 2 clips (10 rds each) b/c each stage is a maximum of 18-rds.

I did come across one club that wants newbies to watch rather than shoot the first match -- not the best idea, so be sure he gets to shoot!

I'd definitely have 3 mags, misses have been known to occur! And guns/mags have been known to fail.

Plus, sometimes you'll see a std's type stage where you are required to shoot 6, reload shoot 6, reload shoot 6 ...

but yea, .99 % could be done with 2 mags.

For the 6+6+6 stage, I loaded 12 in one of my 2 mags (even tho, I have 4 mags). Or could have reloaded a mag, since it's off the clock. Not exactly good form, but for IDPA newbies it would be perfectly acceptable with the good folks that shoot here.
