If you could get anything you wanted made by CNC for free...

I good friend of mine who does some machine work just acquired a brand new CNC machine. He's wanting something to work on for practice and offered to make anything (within reason) that I want. He will use any machinable material up to the hardness of stainless steel (unless it's too expensive, ie gold, etc.). Anything harder and I have to purchase the bits (which isn't going to happen).

It cannot be anything that requires an actual firearms manufacturing license. It would be nice if it was something useful that could be duplicated and marketed/sold.

If you have a really cool idea you might just get one for your trouble. Or he might totally screw it up and you get nothing.:neener:

Let's hear your cool ideas.

How about a barrel and slide pair?
+1 for this, especially in 1911. Depending on how cheaply you can make and sell these, you may spark a wave of 1911 builds on THR!

I can think of two things I'd really like:
1. A small metal folding case no bigger than a paperback book (like the one you see on some novelty Bibles) that has a combination lock embedded.
2. A false battery for a laptop that could hold an ultra-slim gun like a P-3AT. Some laptops have a main battery but also a special bay which can be used to hold a CD drive, a spare hard drive, or a spare battery.

just kidding

How about some printing plates for $100 bills? If it worked you could buy your 1911 parts...
:D

Inserts to replace the wood or rubber in a GP 100 or Sp101 grip. I think the SP would look slick with a smooth metal insert. Or a set of smooth sided grips for my Ruger Standard.

My brother in law has a nice CNC setup for engraving. Thinking of getting some of my stuff engraved. Also have a friend with a1911, and was gonna engrave this little drawing he made on the wooden grips.

1911 grips (perhaps w/ initials or a logo or family crest carved into it) :D
checkered, 1/2 checkered, smooth, serrated, golf-ball texture, scales, ...
Heck, I would forward you my family crest to try out on a set of 1911 grips panels! ;)

I'd look at all the myriad of rings, rail panels, and attachment methods for hanging stuff off the fronts of your Ar-15s and tactical shotties. Make some of those while NOT charging an arm and a leg, and you'll do well...

Some weaver/picatinny rails. You don't need a CNC mill to do those but it's perhaps easier with CNC. Once the program and tooling are set up, crank out a dozen or so of them.

I'd also suggest trying to machine your own "scout scope mount" for a milsurp rifle, the kind that you take off the rear sight leaf and put this thing on instead. I paid $50 for one that didn't have much machining in it, just an Al (IIRC) block with some cutouts in it and a few tapped holes for set-screws to hold it to the gas block (mine was for an SKS).

And, I'd also try to design your own poor-man's peep sights, kind of like a windage & elevation adjustable Mojo rear sight. I've been meaning to buy one but haven't quite wanted one bad enough yet to scrape up the $50 or whatever they want for them. You could make your own for cheap and your friend's CNC (actually you don't need a CNC for this either, just any kind of milling machine. I don't have one anymore :( )

I don't know the legal issues surrounding such, but would it be illegal for him to manufacture a firearm for his own use, or to give as a gift or whatnot, as long as he wasn't selling them for profit or makign a business out of it?

Get him to make me a nice M1 Garand bayonet, or a threaded 1911 barrel :p

Do you have to provide a disk or CD with the drawings on them, or just some paper drawings, or ? I've got a few ideas for a HIGH-capacity (100 rounds plus) 10/22 magazine....
