If you could have ONLY 1 BP rifle?

Jaymo, just noticed your question toward the bottom of your post #41..I use the Army Model with the 8 inch barrel. The carbine has an 18 inch barrel. The 8 inch barrel will carry down range a bit better than the 5.5 inch barrel and will also give a more complete powder burn....

If this is a dream BP firearm I would love to have the flintlock that Wallace Gussler made in the film "Gunsmith of Williamsburg." I watched that film in my high school wood shop way back when and have been hooked on flinters and black powder ever since.

How about an early T/C renegade with a replacement Green Mountain barrel in .50 cal., accurate as can be out to 100 yards. I've got a Cook & Brother carbine thats almost as accurate with .575 minne ball loads. Hard to choose just one. My son's got a .62 cal. flintlock rifle made by Kit Ravenshear that just beats everything I can shoot. He won't trade me for that one.

I'd love to put a GM barrel on my Renegade or New Englander. Trouble is, mine are both left handed percussion models. I don't know if the LH breech plug will fit the GM barrels or not. I also haven't removed the breech plugs from mine and am a little hesitant to experiment without more knowledge of the proper removal sequence.

If I could have only on BP rifle then it would be my Traditions .50 caliber Hawken that I built from a kit. If I could have one custom made, then it would be a replica of Ferguson's .68 caliber breech loading rifle.

Only one rifle???

It would be a tough choice between the early Great Plains 50cal with the target peeps front and rear, or the Navy Arms Hawken Hunter in 58 cal with bead and peep sights.

The 58 cal has taken a deer and an elk so far. The Lyman GP only squirrels and other small game so far.

Get crap at every rendezvous about peep sights, so I have to talk them into shooting for no prizes. They tell me that's cheating without open sights. I'm just there for the shooting fun.

Both are good shooters, but the Lyman is sure a pretty gun.

Great Plains Photo

Here's a picture of the Lyman 50cal GP rifle and a bear track in the dirt road.

I never got a shot at the big black bear, but kept my eyes open for him while leaning against trees on deer stand. I was walking back to camp when he flew across the dirt road.

This was a week long hunt about 15 miles to the south of the Columbia River (Hood River area). I was carrying a deer tag, bear tag, and cougar tag on this hunt.

You can see the empty 9mm brass that's holding the hammer from the cap. It also keeps the rain off the cap.

Not a rifle - if I could keep only one muzzleloader, it'd be a .62 cal flint fowler.
