I'm thinking of getting one and wonder how i should mod it. I was thinking about a bull barrel and a cheap 3-9x32 scope and if theres still room on the budget for it a new stock to fit the bull barrel. Or maybe a trigger Job and a scope. I would love any input.

Only those that make the trigger crisp and lighter. As for appearance, I am not one for changing much (like changing stocks, adding a bunch of bells and whistles, etc). I might put a .22 Rimfire Scope on it (more than likely an inexpensive straight 4 power scope) with good rings and mount. Several magazines and several bricks of ammo.

I have one, and already have a scope, a Tasco of some sort I bought back in the eighties, not long after buying the gun. I also have a couple of banana magazines, one of which actually works. I don't think I could spend that much on mine, but I would like a sling and maybe some of the M-1 Garand-style sights I saw in the Rifleman once...

As with anything, it depends what you want to do with it.

Casual plinking? Hunting? Tactical training?

I shot a Tactical rimfire rifle match yesterday and those with a 3x9 scope cussed it on the moving targets, since they had 2.5 seconds to put two rds each on five targets. All they saw was brown.

Red dots ruled the match, but a 1x4 scope would've, also.

Casual plinking, get whatever scope or optic you want and plenty of mags, including the new Ruger 25 rd mag.

Were it me, I'd get a Power Custom hammer and sear, ($60) a Tactical Innovations extended mag release (the one that curves under the triggerguard) ($35) and a Millet or Bushnell dot sight. ($60-$120) That'd be about $200

I won a .920 SS fluted barrel awhile ago, requiring a new stock. I got the Hogue Overmolded to go with it. This might add another $200 if buying new.

I like it quite a bit more now. It's much more versatile than before. But that's what I wanted.

I'd buy this:
Volquartsen Trigger Kit

And this:
Green Mountain Fluted Bull Barrel

And this:
Hogue .920 stock

That'll take care of the accuracy issues by giving it a good crisp 2lb trigger (the factory trigger is something like 8lbs on a 6lb rifle), a good barrel, and a nice stock that'll free float that bull barrel.

Half the fun of owning a 10/22 is modifying them! Check out RimfireCentral for more 10/22 info than you can handle.

It'll break your budget by $25 but you'd have to start spending many hundreds more to get it more accurate than that'll get you.

one of the lower end heavy barrels that seems to be pretty good is the green mountain line. i bought 1 and was happy enough with it that we went and got my son one.

we got them (stainless models) at the mesquite tx gunshow, for 129 each (if i remember right). then we got hogue stocks for them for about 60 each.

they are a lower end barrel i think, but great accuracy for the money.

EDIT: ole doubletap beat me to it (the green mountain part)

I would put tech sights and a sling on it. Then I would use the rest to attend an Appleseed. Well at least that's what i did.

I would buy a 10/22 Deluxe Sporter - and the only mod I would do is to buy one of those $200 complete drop-in trigger groups from Volquartsen or Power Custom

The only thing wrong with the stock gun is the heavy trigger in the plastic trigger groups. The bench rest accuracy is 'minute of squirrel head' at 75 yards with the bedded factory barrel anyway, so IMO the heavy barrels just add needless weight. It's a .22.

Thanks for the tips doubletapdrew and flyinbryan. very helpful. if i got those items what would i use to aim. or does the barrel have sights?

lol, oh ya, you would need a scope.

but like you were saying, you could just get a cheapo 3x9 till you could swing a better one. it would be a great start, and accurate enough to chase flies around your targets @50yds.

big fun.

Pretty much any heavy barrel is not going to have a front sight post so you need a scope. A decent rimfire scope will probably run you $40-$130 (ie a used weaver k4 to a mueller APV). If you want a weaver k4 I can sell you mine, I traded it out for a mueller.

The trigger kit will make a big difference so I'd do that first. I did my barrel and stock first. When I changed out the trigger for the VQ kit (actually I'm sure any aftermarket trigger kit is better than stock) my group sizes were cut in half.
When you decide to do the barrel and stock you can sell the factory barrel, stock, and barrel band to recoup some of your losses.

I just got one. With an extra $200 I got 5 Ruger BX-25 mags a few thousand rounds of ammo.

I didn't feel the need to buy any other doo-dads.

What bnkrtstk said.

Why spend that much on "mods" to a rifle when for far less you can get one that works right out of the box? Get a Marlin, get a big pile of ammunition and shoot rather than fixing what Ruger still can't be bothered to get right.

I'd buy a decent trigger/hammer group, possibly an inexpensive scope and mount and spend the rest on ammunition and practice, practice, practice.

$200 will buy A LOT of .22lr ammo. I'd be modifying as many targets as I could. (Assuming the 10/22 has decent sights.)
