If you had the choice between a, .270, 30-06, .303. what would you take as a rifle to hunt any animal in north america (Elk, moose, coyote, deer, black bear, grizzly, big horn sheep, mountain goat.
.30-06 can be hand-loaded within a wide range of velocities and pressures and with an large number of bullet weights and types. It's the Swiss Army knife of rifle rounds.
I have a feeling the OP knew before the OP asked. Or the OP has never visited the hunting section before to find TONS of people singing the '06 praises. I'm a short action fan, but I give credit where credit is due, it's a good round.
.30-06. One rifle takes all the fun out of buying a bunch, each designed for a specific purpose. But , with this restriction, no cartrige does so many different things well.
3006 cal. The only rifle i have in this cal is the M1 Garand. Its heavy and not suitable for deep snow hunting elk and moose. I may have to bring along the .303 No 4 Mk 1 instead.
So if its in the lower states like deer and medium game , id take my Garand .
Wait a minute. I thought tasty animals only fell over dead if we shot'em with the newest, flattest shooting, jacked-up (or short) magnum out there. Surley you all don't think a 100 year old cartridge like the ought-six is capable of performing all these incredible feats.
I started reloading for the '06 in 1950. Round lead ball for squirrel, on up to elk-capable (although I've not shot an elk). I guess that's about as all-around as it gets in the lower 48.
But I'd rather use a .223 on prairie dogs, actually. .243 on coyotes and smaller deer. .22 rimfire on the DG known as tin cans.
It doesn't matter what you shoot a moose with. It takes them a few minutes to figure out that they are dead. I have shot a ton of whitetails, mulies and antelope with a 270, but when it comes to elk, moose or the big bears I would feel a lot better with an 06 in my hand.
The 30-06 will shoot same weight bullets faster than a 270. And, although the BC of the 270 will be better PO Ackley said that most shooters couldn't hit a flock of circus tents at the distance that would come in to play.
I usually hunt with a 280 just because, but it would be hard to figure out anything it will do that the '06 won't. Same with the 270.
