If you had the choice between a, .270, 30-06, .303. what would you take as a rifle to hunt any animal in north america (Elk, moose, coyote, deer, black bear, grizzly, big horn sheep, mountain goat.

.30-06 can be hand-loaded within a wide range of velocities and pressures and with an large number of bullet weights and types. It's the Swiss Army knife of rifle rounds.

30.06 takes the fun out of it though. One shot one kill kinda gets old unless you are hungry.

I have a feeling the OP knew before the OP asked. Or the OP has never visited the hunting section before to find TONS of people singing the '06 praises. I'm a short action fan, but I give credit where credit is due, it's a good round.

Well I've gotta go with the 270 because I still have one. I sold my 06...Now ya'll make me wish I hadn't

This almost isn't even an opinionated question, but closer to a factual one. The 30-06 is the best choice without a question IMO.

3006 cal. The only rifle i have in this cal is the M1 Garand. Its heavy and not suitable for deep snow hunting elk and moose. I may have to bring along the .303 No 4 Mk 1 instead.

So if its in the lower states like deer and medium game , id take my Garand .

Wait a minute. I thought tasty animals only fell over dead if we shot'em with the newest, flattest shooting, jacked-up (or short) magnum out there. Surley you all don't think a 100 year old cartridge like the ought-six is capable of performing all these incredible feats.

I started reloading for the '06 in 1950. Round lead ball for squirrel, on up to elk-capable (although I've not shot an elk). I guess that's about as all-around as it gets in the lower 48.

But I'd rather use a .223 on prairie dogs, actually. :) .243 on coyotes and smaller deer. .22 rimfire on the DG known as tin cans.

If you don't reload...the 30'06. Lot's of store bought ammunition in various cxp1, cxp2, and cxp3 configurations.

If you do reload...then the 30'06. Lot's of different reloading data for cxp1, cxp2, and cxp3 configurations.

A 270 isn't a bad choice either, the main thing to remember about the 270 is to buy 130 grains.

From a 270 affectionado.

It doesn't matter what you shoot a moose with. It takes them a few minutes to figure out that they are dead. I have shot a ton of whitetails, mulies and antelope with a 270, but when it comes to elk, moose or the big bears I would feel a lot better with an 06 in my hand.

The 30-06 will shoot same weight bullets faster than a 270. And, although the BC of the 270 will be better PO Ackley said that most shooters couldn't hit a flock of circus tents at the distance that would come in to play.

I usually hunt with a 280 just because, but it would be hard to figure out anything it will do that the '06 won't. Same with the 270.
