Boris Johnson urged people to walk away if they see a crime committed rather than risk their own lives.
The London mayor admitted he would tell his own children to "look after themselves" rather than play Good Samaritan to a victim.
Just last year, he called on people to "take a risk" and tackle thugs, saying the chance of being stabbed was "microscopic".
But Mr Johnson revealed a "very nice ex-jailbird" recently warned him: "If you see a fight in the street, don't risk it, someone might have a knife."
He said: "I'm afraid that may sound like a lack of public spirit if someone is being badly attacked.
"But if I was giving advice to my kids and there was a bar brawl it would be to look after themselves.
"Everybody is shocked by the level of violence we are seeing, particularly towards young people, and we must all work as hard as we can to reverse this dreadful trend."

1 Give our police tools to catch knife thugs
First, we must give police the tools they need to effectively stop and search youngsters without losing their goodwill.
The only guaranteed method of detecting a hidden knife is with a magnetic scanner. And being scanned is less offensive than being searched. Every bobby in a knife hotspot must be given a hand-held scanner.

2 Launch amnesty to bring in the blades
We must show our determination to disarm Britain with a new knife amnesty.
This will allows those in gangs who fear arrest to dump blades without fear. In the past, knives were handed in at police stations. Now secure knife boxes should be positioned in places where youngsters can visit unobserved.
3 Nurses must report treating stab victims
Doctors and nurses working in A&E must be required to tell police about on the serious knife wounds they treat.
Currently, medical staff are obliged to report gunshot injuries even if the patient does not want the police involved.
But stab wounds go unreported - so police have no chance to follow up many incidents.
4 Teach all pupils that knives solve nothing
Parents and teachers must ensure children realise that carrying a blade does not offer them any form of protection.
Every pupil aged 11 or over should have sessions with police officers who can tell from personal experience of the devastation a knife killing causes to family, friends and the larger community.
5 Texts and internet will help win battle
And we must ensure the hardhitting messages get to those who need to hear them most - by using social networking sites and text messages.
For example, texts could be sent out to every bluetooth mobile in a nightclub twice during an evening - reminding partygoers of the dangers of a row escalating out of control.
