Basic legal question- At age 18, can I walk into a gun show, and purchase a handgun from a NON-LICENSED gun dealer- just a guy with a table of handguns trying to sell them? I was wondering because perhaps the background check has to be called in through an FFL, making the transaction illegal. Any help? thanks.

You can buy a handgun from an unlicensed person at age 18, assuming you still live in Texas.

Depends on the state. In VA you can buy a handgun from an unlicensed seller (private sale) if you're over 18. It's perfectly legal.

Licensed (FFL) gun dealers, on the other hand, are prohibited by federal law from selling handguns to anyone under 21. But federal law doesn't apply to a private sale.

sorry, I meant a non-licensed person who wants to sell guns. Does everyone who has their own table at a gun show have to be an FFL? If not, could I buy a handgun from one of these sellers? I live in Texas, by the way. thanks.

Just keep in mind that in order to buy ammo, you have to be 21 years of age.

Only if you're buying from an FFL holder. Non-FFL sellers can sell ammo to those under 21 if state law permits.

Don't be surprised if they refuse to sell to you when they realize you are 18, even though it's perfectly legal...

Also realize how many people at those tables are FFLs. The last number I saw said the tables selling firearms are ruffly 80% FFLs. I wouldn't doubt that, even if the number was higher.

You guys are lucky!

I live in minnesota and we can't buy handguns or semi auto rifles until we're 21.

I'm just hoping the next president gives me the chance of buying one legally.
