I'm adopting two more Russian immigrants.

I went into a local gunmonger today to browse around while my better half took her car to the body shop. Now, I had no intention of buying anything, but we all know how the best laid plans can be rent asunder.

So, there I am, looking at the milsurps and lo and behold, I spot two M38's and two 1891/30's. They were $89 each, plus tax and background check. I ended up putting one of each on layaway. Both were in excellent condition, with matching numbers, and both dated 1942. The only thing wrong with either is the M38's upper handguard is a different color wood than the rest of the stock. Of course, I could have saved some money if I had my C&R, but I haven't yet submitted my application. These will look really nice sitting next to my 1946 Russian M-44.

I just LOVE 7.62x54R... Ruskie guns are fun. They can be used for anything and still expected to fire!

As a man of compassion, you are truly a humanist and an inspiration to the rest of us. Me, I have two orphans I took in on my own and another two from their previous foster parent.

Mine are grounded at the moment... they invited some of their friends to come live with us, and I didn't know about it! The nerve! Now I have more mouths to feed!

Between the 91/30 and the M44, which is your favorite? If you could only have one, which one would you keep? I'm toying with the idea of a Russkie milsurp.....

RileyMc,

That's a tough decision, but I think I'd have to vote for the M44. There's just something about the way it kicks and the fireball that comes out of its' business end that makes it a winner; not to mention the ultra-cool-factor of having a permanently attached bayonet on the end.

La Pistoletta,

The only reasonably priced Dragunovs I've seen were the Chinese copies. The Romanian 'Dragunovs' aren't actually SVD's. They're similiar, but, IIRC, they have shorter actions and a few other differences. The ChiCom's can also be found from time-to-time chambered in .308.

The Russian Tigr rifles are sort of like dragunovs, but they are quite expensive
