So, here in Iowa, getting a CCW permit can vary from essentially shall issue (Polk, Tama, Jones co's), to no issue (Linn, Johnson, Cedar co's). Well, Linn county is on that hard list, but I was able to justify getting into the CCW class, then passed that a couple weeks back. The next step, is passing the shooting test...a score of 70 or better, on a 25 yard rapid-fire target, within 10 minutes.

I've never claimed to be a great shot, and at first my practice for the test showed it. I talked to someone, and they emphasized taking my time shooting...the whole 10 minutes if possible. I tried that, and it worked great! I practiced the other night, then went to qualify today. The results speak for themseves, a 91/100!! :D I took over 8 minutes to shoot, but it sure didn't seem that long to me. BTW, I shot with a Kimber BP Ten II.

That's a 3 shot group in the 10 ring. :what: Don't think I could do that again.

I'm not trying to brag, I'm just proud of myself, and figured this crowd would appreciate this more than some of the local folks I know.

Nice shooting. I'm surprised that they make people qualify at 25 yards. That is WAY beyond normal defensive shooting distances.

Thats farther then I had to qualify for my Bail Enforcement test. You should be damned proud of your shooting and accomplishments

Thanks all! Yeah, 25 yards is pretty ridiculous. As the instructors told us, it's not likely you'll ever be in a gunfight at 25 yards. And, odds are the other guy is not going to be as good as we had to be to qualify.

What was the reason that you gave for getting the permit? I lived in Union county (now in Warren) and we didn't have to shoot at all. We just sat through a 4 hour class with one of the deputies and then took a written test. Luckily Warren co is pretty much the same. They told me to get my records from Union co about a month before my permit expires and bring them in and they would hook me up. I pretty much told my wife that we would only ever live in green colored counties(per packing.org)

The justification I had to use was carrying a specified amount of cash. This amount may vary from county to county, but most Linn county folks know how much it is here. I had a Johnson county permit a few years back, and it stated "When transporting cash or valuables", and I didn't have to shoot for that one, although you do now (and have to shoot an 80 I believe).

Congrats. I agree that getting a carry permit in Iowa ranges from quite easy to you have to "know somebody".

Here in Harrison county, we didn't even have any range time. Classroom only.
