I've always viewed these as "neat" guns, but for me, find it too heavy firing too weak a round to be considered for defense.

For a FUN gun? Sure, but I always seem to have something else to buy instead.

I saw the show when it first aired, and have watched several episodes. I don't always agree on what side is truly at the advantage, and I certainly don't agree that the guy with the Makarov has an advantage over the guy with the Beretta. The shows "tests" said that the Makarov was more accurate than the Beretta, but that's debateable. All this show did was show one guy was more accurate with a pistol at night than one other guy. I'd still take a Beretta over the Mak, and a CZ before any other 9, be it 9mm Mak, or 9mm Luger.

I think Maks ARE more accurate than Beretta 92/96 series pistols. Blowback pistols almost always are more accurate than anything with a swinging link ect. OF course the Beretta holds more rounds and shoots a more powerful cartridge. Blowback pistols also tend to be somewhat less reliable too (though the mak may be an exception to this.) Although that silly TV show should NOT be taken too seriously, they happened to be right on the accuracy issue.

Looking for a good E. German Makarov myself but the only ones I find are priced skyward.
:barf:

So pay the price.

Your car was priced "skyward" to anyone who bought a new car in 1969.

I bought a new Porsche 911S in 1969 for $6795.00 and my brother bought a new VW bug in 1967 for $1740.00

The "I want but the prices are too high" statements are just plain silly.

(I currently own THREE East German Makarov pistols.:neener: Had four, but sold one earlier this year for $345.00 in GB)

After watching the video, I've pretty much concluded that whoever surprises the other or has the initial advantage will likely come out on top. It would also be interesting to see a face off between Spetznas and Delta or the Rangers.

With regards to the Mak-M9 debate, IMO the Green Beret needs better training with his pistol. I think he was jerking the trigger and threw off his shots. While the GB easily beat the time of his opponent, sometimes speed isn't the answer. The difference in accuracy between the Mak and M9 wasn't the reason for the results; poor shooting with the M9 was.

Bought an E. german mak a few days ago , like it a lot , very accurate. Hated the grips. bought a pakage with a bbl , bbl spring, cleaning rod ,and grips for 50$ (new bbl). the grips fit fine , but the grip screw would not tighten it just kept turning? the grips are redish plastic? with a star in the middle. would shure like to tighten them down. also what about pearce grips?

The Makarov is a great little pistol.

Tiny sights but very accurate. I took my CHL qualifying test with my Bulgarian Mak. Be careful to disassemble and clean out the firing pin channel every once in a while though. Gunk in there can cause the firing pin to stick in a forward position. If you don't keep it clean, you may get a slam fire.

The video turned what's left of my brain to oatmeal though.

By the way, what's a Mak going for these days? I think I paid 150.00 for mine.

spence- you might have the wrong grip screw. Go to this link to see the difference between screws. http://makarov.com/tech.html

Also, EG Maks originally come with the black grips without the star. Soviet, Bulgarian and Chinese Maks came with red grips with the star.

EG Maks go for around $350-$400 nowadays but could be had for less if one is patient enough. I still hear of people bagging them for $200 but they were at the right place at the right time with fast wallet draws.

Okay, first of all that M9 was not being handled the way it should be. The russian was taking his time. The US ARMY should have had a better representative than a guy who's PT consist's doing laps through the bases Burger King drive through. I would personally love to complete this challege with anyone that has a Makarov. I belive that the Beretta was handed to the worst possible candidate for the competition.

the makarov.com people recomended a 10x32 machine screw, but a 5mmx16mm did the trick thanks! now I have an eg mack with russian, chinese, or bulgy grips . Iwill still get the pearce grips tho.that web sight got me interested in the RK-59 anybody know about them?

No, not silly at all. Your comparison doesn't apply. Occasionally there is still a bargain and I'm waiting to pounce on one. I paid the price for both a Russian and a Bulgarian so it's not like I have to have an E. German.

Being obnoxious is not a virtue.
