I don't hunt and other than paper punching I have no practical use for this gun.

HOWEVER, I could not pass it up for the price.

Came with powder, dies, brass, bullets, and a box of Weatherby ammo.

1940-1941 Mauser converted to 338-06.

(I added a budget scope I had laying around)

IF I intended to just punch paper for fun, what bullets do you recommend? Are the 200gr Hornady's ok to start with?

Powder-wise I have some 4895 and Varget.

If you just want to punch paper any of the 200 grain SP bullets will work fine. Powders like IMR 3031 or IMR 4320 work well with 200 grain SP bullets. Moving up to a 250 SP grain bullet powder like good old IMR 4064 works well. I believe a 275 grain bullet is about as heavy as they get and I think the Weatherby offering in loaded ammunition is a 210 grain SP. I only remember about that much and only because I had one go through my gun shop I had maybe 25 years ago. Should prove to be enjoyable for you.

I had a Rem. 700 set up with a custom Shilen barrel etc. for .338-06 AI. I never have got that gun to shoot as accurately as my .35 Whelen no matter what I tried. I never use it anymore.
