Hi all,
As the title states I am looking for some input here. I am looking to do 2 large (100+) batches of both 30-30 win (for myself,) and .32 winchester special (for my brother.) Those are fairly large rifle batches for me anyhow. The 30-30 will be loaded with 150gr Hornady round nose interlok. The .32 will be loaded with 170gr hornady flat point interlok. Powder is getting extremley hard to come by in my area, and if youre lucky enough to find what you are looking for, local shops charge so much, you might as well just pay the hazzard fee to have it shipped. I have a really good 30-30 load with rx7 that I have used for 5+ years. Problem is, I havnt seen rx7 for sale around here since covid wreaked its havoc. My brother just bought a winchester chambered in .32 win special. Obviously ammo is hard to find. I actually had one heck of a time even finding the bullets to load. He asked if we could work a load up for it. Id like to keep my 30-30 and his .32 using the same powder if possible. IMR 4198 is kind of my "universal" powder if you will. When I first started loading, it was readilly available, fairly cheap, and luckily it fit the bill with most of the rifle cartriges I was loading when I first started. So I usually try to keep a few pounds on hand. My lyman 50th shows this powder for both cartriges. I tried a few loads in my 30-30 and was not super impressed. (At least compared to my rx7 load.) I did not reach anywhere close to max load, simply because my rx7 load settled really nicely fairly low. I was actually only at 1925fps through a chrono. Any higher and it started to stray. (most of my loads, including 45-70 with 4198 like to be at or above book max. Obviously im very careful when working those loads.)

Here is my question. I guess I have never been in the position where powders were so hard to find, and so expensive when you start getting picky. Has anyone had luck with either of these using 4198? I know its not the ideal powder for the application, but its what I have, and its what is available locally. (at $60 per pound .) Should I try pushing the pressure? Should I cut my losses and just spend the $35-$40 in hazzard fees for some more rx7? Other rifle powders I have but can no longer readily get are rx22, IMR 4064, and a small amount of IMR 3031. Before anyone says "just load different lots and see what happens," I have had 2 knee surgeries in the last 4 months. Im only 2 weeks out from a complete ACL reconstruction. This will give me something to do so that I dont lose my mind just sitting around on the couch, but I also cant just take off and shoot multiple times a week for at least another month due to my restrictions. Id just like to find somewhere in the ballpark to start for now. If anyone has any experiences, or loads that might get me pointed in the right direction, I would REALLY REALLY appreaciate it!

Powder Valley has IMR 4064 and Hodgdon LeveRevolution in stock. $22 HazMat + S/H + sales tax if your state collects it on internet sales (Florida does) so it won’t be cheap to buy just one pound but you will probably want at least 4# anyway since you are feeding two rifles.
I haven’t had bad results using 4198 but it is just so much better for .45-70 and I always keep plenty of 3031 on hand so I just haven’t really tried it that much. It is a little fast for 30-30 but it’s fine for close range hunting. What are you trying to take with it?

I don't hunt with my 30-30, just need enough to put a hole in paper or ring some steel.

Reduced H4895 load-
25.0 grains with 110 grain RMR round nose

I also see Hodgdon lists Benchmark in their loads. That's a powder with a burn rate close to 4198, and may get you where you need to be.

Primarily whitetail. I have taken it bear hunting when I’ve lent my 45-70 to my nephew, but I pretty much just hunt whitetail with it.

Cast or jacketed? 4198 is pretty great for cast but if jacketed I would like something a bit more medium: 3031 or 4064, Varget or 4895. 4198 is a tough row to hoe with jacketed in 30-30/32WS - going to max out around 2100 fps.

You can get 2000fps with a 150gr JSP over IMR 4198 and that’s good for a 100yd Buck, easy. I don’t know how long of a shot you get but down here in the kudzu and palmetto 100yds is a LONG way.

To add to my previous post, Hodgdon has loading data for Benchmark, in both 30-30 and 32 Win Special. Velocities are a touch higher than 4198.

Powder Valley has Benchmark in stock.

For hunting loads in 30-30 - If you're open to buying powder, for my 30-30 deer loads I use Leverevolution near max with Hornady interlock 170's to get velocity I want to run at (2200 fps). 3031 does nice job, but velocity runs a little lower than Leverevolution.

Also I have had very accurate results with IMR 4064 in the 32 Special. Tried 3031 but did not group as well for me.

Good mention. For the IMR 4198 / 150 grain target loads I mentioned previously, I do use Berrys plated which runs similar to lead. This is not a hunting round.

I would.... I DO... run IMR4198 with cast (170grn) .30 cal bullets, in both the .30-30, and the .308. If I was shooting jacketed, I move up to IMR3031... to get the velocity I want without all the pressure.

It's been decades since I reloaded for 30-30 and when I did it was for my my father who only used his 30-30 Model 94 for plinking and target practice. The most accurate load I worked out for him used IMR 4198 and a 110 jacketed bullet with IMR 3031 a close second. I have used IMR 4198 in 222 Remington also. 4198 has always been an good powder for me.

If you have 3031 on hand 30ish grains in the 30-30 is all day every day. If your shooting jacketed then the 4064 would do great in the 30-30 as well. I say this as they are a good choice and you have them. Haven't loaded 32 special but it's essentially the same case. I believe all three choices work good in both cartridges so if not buying powder is the goal I would be more than happy working with any of the three...

All I ever load for 30-30/32SPL is 170 grain jacketed bullets. I like 3031 the best but 4064 is close behind in my 5 different rifles. I would choose one and order a 8 LB keg from say Powder Valley and have enough to shoot your worked up load for several years. Buying a couple pounds at a time locally has always been something I avoid doing. I try to purchase several kegs at a time so Has-Mat/ shipping is negligible.
