IMR 4227 for 30-06

DuPont, who owned and manufactured IMR powder until the 1980's listed all rifle powders they made for almost all the cartridges commonly hand loaded at the time. Some powders were less than ideal but in a pinch they could be made to work. Not so many lawyers chasing possible law suits back them, no we are cautious of law suits so we don't dare say thing, especially in print.

At one time DuPot also included data for SR-4756 and SR-4759 in their mauals. Those two along with IMR-4227 were good powders for reduced velocity loads.

I've been playing around with 170 grain cast lead bullets in .30-06 pushing them with 10 grains of Unique. I get surprising good accuracy with a very light recoil. Not a 200 yard load but out to 100 for up to coyote shooting it would be fine.

IMR 4227 would make a nice reduced velocity powder. Much better choices for standard velocity loads.

All the best,
D. White

I am surprised, as SR-4756 is seriously position sensitive. SR-4759 was made specifically for reduced loads in rifle calibers.

SR-4759 works well in 30-06. I was shooting some the other day with Speer 130hps.
Nice load. The new manuals (as has been discussed) are like night and day when campared to the old manuals.

....surprised to see in an old IMR handloader guide formulas for 4227 for 30-06 with 150g bullets.

It's certainly usable, but max loads would be under 75% case fill and therefore prone to wide(r) velocity variations.

As a an aside: My old #6 Speer book still shows H4227 for light/110gr plinking -- and only a 1/5 - 1/3 case fill (!)
