New to this site but have been lurking around for some time and finally took the plunge! Lovin' it! :)

Lots of posts on this site already about IMR 800x, with reminders to stick with published load data.

I found this site helpful when my free bullets came in from Hornady (their "Get Loaded" promotion when you buy qualifying products and follow instructions on their website). They sent me the 110 grain XTP's (I had no other choice in the .357 caliber, but heck, 100 XTP's for free!).

I found load data on various reputable sites with various powders I had, but thought the H110/W296 would push it too fast (over 2000 fps) and looked at a dusty old can of IMR 800x and wondered "what the heck."

Then I thought about IMR's freebie load manual and discovered a load for 800x that pushes a 110 grain Hornady close to 1500 fps.

So I plan on "working up" a load with the 800x powder just to get it off my shelf and will be individually weighing each charge due to the large flake nature of this powder and horror stories regarding it's metering characteristics.

Has anyone else worked up loads with 800 x they really like? I saw some postings scattered throughout this site, but I want to hear from those "sold" on 800x as a viable .357 mag powder. I load several bullet weights (usually with H110/W296), so any load suggestion/experience is welcome.

Also, how clean does it burn in the .357 in your experience?

Here is a link to the PDF version of the IMR Reloader's Guide that is provided free and was helpful to me:

IMR 800X is an excellent 357 magnum powder in the upper end !

It`s only down fall is the LARGE FLAKES !!!

If ya like 800X try HERCO very similar characteristics.

When loading serious rounds I do as you do weigh each charge .

I load from 158-183 gr boolits & stay under 1250 fps as my alloy will strip if I go faster .

I have added a bit of powdered graphite (the factory does it) & it seems to help , good enuff for upper midrange loading +/ - .15gr. . Funny thing is the Sds are as close on these as the weighed charges !!
