I've been using H4198 for years and like it but ran out. I have a lot of IMR4198 and see that many load books like it. However, I'm using Barnes Original 300 gr FN bullets and can't find IMR 4198 data for them. Normally I would just do a comparison w/ similar bullets but what troubles me is that Barnes suggests max load around 54 gr of H 4198 and all other bullet maker's guides show significantly higher loads w/ that powder. Any suggestions? FYI, I am comparing apples-to-apples (all modern lever guns). Thanks.

Let me check my reloading data......I sold my 45-70 marlin, but that was all I used was IMR 4198......

your barnes orginial 300 gr, that jacketed or cast?

ok, I found Seirra 300 gr FN, starting load of 43.2 gr, vel: 1747, Max load: 48 gr vel: 1901

so anywhere between them two you should be fine! I worked up a wildcat load using .357 jacket hollowpoint sabot (138 gr) with 42 gr of IMR4198. I shot a Ford c3 transmission at 75 yrds with it. The tranny was standing up on the bell housing. Smoke and flame when round hit, blew the tranny back 4 feet with whole all the way thru the housing!!!!!!! Start with your minimal load and work your way up. Stay safe.
