THE CHAIR IS AGAINST THE WALL
This Sunday will be the year's first Pueblo West Tactical Rifle Match.

In a nutshell, think of the match as IPSC with a rifle. Paper IPSC targets from close range to fifty yards, steel flash targets, MGM poppers, and a LaRue from 200-425, all field positions.

The match consists of three stages: long range, medium range, and standards with a minimum round count of 30ish rounds per stage. Bring extra ammo, though.

If you've got a rimfire gun, we'll be doing some rimfire side matches as well, so bring your .22!

Setup starts at 7am, first shot goes down range at 10am.

Subsequent matches will be held the fourth Sunday of the month until October.

If you've got a semi-auto rifle and want to test your skills, this match is a great way to do it, and lots of fun to boot.

Recommended Equipment:

  • semi-auto rifle
  • two-four magazines
  • magazine carrier (or pockets big enough to stuff extra mags in)
  • 150-200 rounds (no steel core allowed)
  • hearing and eye protection
  • knee pads and elbow pads (not a requirement, but nice to have)

Feel free to contact me if you want additional information or directions to the range.

This is a great match and if you shoot it regularly you can become one of the top rifle shooters on long-range stages at any national-level 3-Gun match.

Here are some photos from this match in the past

I am going to try and make it down. See if I can do my 6920 proud. I found a map but I'd appreciate some decent directions and what's the cost?

For directions type 600 Loma Drive, Pueblo CO 81007 in mapquest and it takes you right to the range. Basically I-25 south to exit 108 then go west for 5 minutes.

$15.

Tomorrows match is a bit iffy with all the snow and rain...

Thanks, considering I'll have to leave here around 530am to make set up time when will we know if the match is 'on'?

WOW that was FUN!!!!!!!

I didnt' shoot that great, but my gun handling was pretty good and I didn't fall down or anything. Tough and challenging stages. I recommend it BIG time!

suck!

i'm flying into denver tomorrow. if i'd read this last week, i totally would have come out a couple days early to shoot this!

i've been dying to shoot some out west

you guys do this last sunday of every month?

Have a lot more confidence in my ability to reach out past 300 yards, even with a wimpy 4x fixed scope and a 16 inch barrel.

Also not a single hiccup from the Colt... mags get dirty, it was dusty and dry and dirt gets everywhere.

That's like 1000 rounds so far without a jam.

You did great Rob. It was good to meet you. I thought Zak and some of the Denver gang might make it down.

Most of us are using low powered scopes. More than 5-6 power and all you do is make your wobble look a lot worse than it is.

Fourth Sunday, March thru Oct.

And some pics taken by our on staff Medic.

These are great matches. I took my FAL, commie 308 as Hoser calls it, last year and had a great time. That is me in Justin's pictures. I didn't place all that well, but I learned great deal about myself as a shooter and my rifle. So if you are in Southern CO on the 4th Sunday of the month I highly recommend this match. The stages are challenging yet still fun.

Justin, do you allow spectators or is it competitors only? I just moved back to CO from TX and would love to watch before I decide on participating. I'm currently in Westcliffe staying with some relatives but will be living in P West once our place is ready. Where in P West do you do this at?

We allow spectators, but only on the condition that they brass.

Just kidding. :)

If you'd like to come watch the match, you're more than welcome to, but I pretty well guarantee you'll wish you brought a rifle.

The match is held at the Pueblo West Sportsman's Club, for the address, put in 600 Loma Drive, Pueblo CO 81007.

If you end up living in Pueblo West, and you own a rifle, you'll enjoy shooting this match.

That looks great - if I was there, I'd enter for sure! :) Question - how do those guys with the FAL's (and G3 clones and such) get on?

I'm going to be entering something very similar soon down here in Florida - as per my other thread will be using my AR - but I think it would be fun to get my G3 clone on the case at some point, but I can imagine it would be a bit unwieldy.

People say the FAL is heavy, long, and difficult to move around with but I did not find this to be the case. I am not in great shape but I did not have any issues lugging my rifle around the courses. The far target at the match I shot was at 425 yards and I rand it 5 times from the 5 different positions on that course, using only iron sights. Sure the AR kids get off much faster follow up shots and normally post faster overall times, but I had a great time running my FAL. ARs are great rifles and I would love to have one, but my first love is my FAL and I will continue to compete with it as ammo allows. Every time my bolt cycles I hear ka- ching, ka- ching....

Very cool Gus - I imagine it also gives people something a bit different to look and and listen to :) Yep, I think I'll do a couple of matches with my AR then bust out the G3tme. Been a few years since I left the army and did anything like this with a rifle (although I do shoot USPSA/IDPA) - am looking forward to having some fun with this. I do hear you on the ka-ching thing though - even with 7.62x51 surplus nowadays....:(

Today's match went well. Perfect weather, the predicted high winds didn't materialize until after the match was over.

Turnout was good. To the new shooters who attended, thanks!

Seriously fun 3rd stage.. that Momenshotz/dog agility tube thing was a riot. Oh and hooray for keeping my iron sights! Makes me tempted (only a little) to try a whole course with irons... but man I'm not sure my eyes are up to it.

And left handed? Really? I have never practiced that EVER. Guess I should once in a while, just like handgun.

A good way to force left-handed rifle shooting but not specify it is to make a right angle with two walls: one on the 180 and one pointing directly uprange on the left side of the port in the first wall. Put the port in the wall on the 180 plane almost directly at the corner and make it small enough so that it's impossible to shoot from the right shoulder.

I was out doing a rifle demo Sunday - wish I could have made the match

We had targets out to about 1700.
