I have recently acquired a 3” round butt model 36 S&W. I purchased this to shoot but after looking it over (I am no expert) I do not believe this gun has ever been fired and the inside of the box is dated 1955. My question is does this gun have a great enough collectors value to keep it in this condition? Thanks for any input.

If the gun has a model number, than it was made in 1957 or later. I believe the date on the box is simply a copyright daqte.

If can provide the first three digits of the serial number of the gun (plus a "J" prefix, if there is one), than I can look it up and give you a ballpark production date.

Not sure if it has a lot of collector value, but the three-inch Chief's Special is a nice-shooting gun. Than again, any pre-lock Smith in the box will eventually be very desirable.

That would place the production date between 1973 and 1974. Not necessarilly too collectible (yet), but a nice find, especially NIB.
