In today's edition of Guns I Want: Dan Wesson Heirloom 1911 in .38 Super

LOL, I got mine before they went down (then back up) in price and was a good deal, locally, at $1700.
$1700…. dang

let me take a few DW photos and see what you fine people think. They got some good stuff at my local shop

They told me no. I asked if I could just buy the 38 Super barrel for my 9mm Guardian and they said no to that too, then went on to "warn" me about altering firearms from their original chambering.

I like to start out with a .38 Super then all you need to convert it to 9mm. is a 9mm barrel assembly (barrel, barrel bushing, link, and link pin), some 9mm. mags, and your already to go. All of my conversions on .38 Supers have been a drop-in fit with no extra fitting or alterations to the gun. Accuracy is decent enough, as is reliability, for practicing with less expensive and more readily available 9mm. ammo.

I've only done 3 conversions and they were all 9mm to begin with. Not that I planned it that way, but that's the only way to get the particular gun I wanted. That'll be the case with this Dan Wesson if I get around to it.

The things you've done are the exact things I've done, except I've not had to change barrel bushings and I run heavier recoil spring in 38S.
I didn't know I needed a 38 Super until I bought a couple of the Sig Sauer 5" match barrels for $29 each. So I had barrels before I had guns...but they're 5" Wilson/Nowlin ramped and the DW needs a Para ramped...and possibly an extractor groove.

Purdy gun. But would you actually shoot it.
That's why my 38 Super started life as a GI model RIA 9mm. There's a I'm stupid story behind that.

Some (don't do this, do your own research) .38 Super's will chamber 9x23, which makes .38 Super look like a target load.

Odd. They should all chamber 9x23. Same dimensions except rimless vs semi-rim. 38 Super Comp is identical externally to 9x23Win.
They're ALMOST the same dimensions. As I recall the taper varied a bit. When I waded into it there was a lot of info from Dane Burns about conversions, and the consensus was some worked and some didn't.

I may have been remembering backwards...was thinking the 9x23 had a more pronounced taper like the typical 9x19, while the 38 Super is straight (even though it really isn't)
