Full tube, empty chamber? If so, do you leave the hammer cocked back, or dry fired down on the empty chamber?

Full tube, round in the chamber?

Why?

This exact thread ran a couple of months ago -- you might search for it. My recollection was that the center of gravity on responses was cruiser ready: hammer down on an empty chamber with the mag either full or down one (which is a good reason to have a mag extension).

Why would you leave the mag downloaded by one?

Many places, Gunsite included, iirc, teach this. If you have buckshot in the magazine tube and slugs on a sidesaddle, for example, w/ the magazine down one you can add a slug to be loaded first if the situation called for it due to distances involved, assailant's concealment, etc.

Full tube empty chamber.
The only shotgun I have with a hammer is a Norinco 97, that isn't suitable, to me, for HD

I think I've settled on 5 00buck rounds in the 6 shot tube, hammer down on an empty chamber (action unlocked), and 5 slugs in the side saddle.

Full tube, empty chamber, firing pin down as I'm not sure my wife could find the action release button in a hurry-up situation.Just rack and shoot.

Remington 870 Express w/ 4-round mag.

Fill the mag, open the action, rest one round on the bolt, or, more correctly, on the extractor. The base of the shell then sits about 1/4" above the face of the bolt; even if the hammer should fall, it's not going to contact the primer.

Safety off; I don't want to fumble with that little button. If it were a Mossberg, that'd be a different story.

Gun rests beside my bed, barrel up. Grab the slide and it's ready to shoot.

(Yes, I live alone, so I don't worry about kids.)

It will soon be a SxS coach gun, loaded with 00 Buck in managed recoil load; action will be open.

grab, close, point, click

I don't own a pump-action yet.

590 8+1 w/ ghost rings.

Empty chamber, trigger pulled/uncocked, safety OFF.

Seven rounds in tube, #1 buck the first three "up", 1-oz slugs after that.

One slug standing nearby to be used as a first shot if deemed necessary.

Grimjaw: Most modern coach guns automatically go on Safe upon closure... so you have to add "Un-safety" somewhere between "Close" & "Click".... if you want to hear "Bang" instead of "Click".
