Well,

Its not the Detective Special I've been looking for, but it was too nice to pass up. I kinda like the alloy frame in this size. Can anyone tell me approx. when it was made (D793XXX)?

S&W keeps records by the shipping date instead of production date.

D750001-D870000 shipped in 1975-76. So, I would guess yours as having shipped from S&W in 1975.

Looks like a nice one!

Model 12's make nice carry guns, but that one looks so nice I'd hesitate to put it in a holster, but I think you'll like how light it is if you do carry it.

Have to ask - it looks there's water on the frame in your photo - oil maybe?

Ha Ha. It is water - or sweat. Storms were moving in and I wanted to rush outside a get a picture in ambient light. Between the sweat and part of the camera strap in the frame it was definitely a rushed picture.

The Model 12's frame does have a couple of small rubs through the finish, so it is not like new, but it is probably about 98%. Doesn't appear to have been shot much at all.

Thanks Cocked & Locked. I just wanted a general idea of its age and I appreciate your answer.
