Independence Month Rimfire Match

I thought it was kinda iffy too; that's why I let someone else score me. LOL. I'm more than happy with a 97. That's still an "A", right?

I am not sure of the scoring.....this was with my Marlin 60 today at the range. First try

EDIT: OOPS I just realized I was supposed to be shooting from 50 yards....:(

Well you kind of got a perfect score of 100...but as you noticed it must be at 50yds (irons) or 100yds (optics). :uhoh:

On the bright side, you now have a new excuse for another range trip. :)

Hahaha, I don't need excuses to go to the range. :neener: But I will definitely remember this next time

Sunday

Unlim-scoped-100. Kimber 82G.

Several targets more or less the same - doing okay and then a flyer... LOL! Language got colorful a few times!

The top four are on the line, so if they go to the highest, I see 99. If not, then 95.

In case you didn't already know about it, here's a link to a site that has hundreds of free, downloadable targets.
I knew about it, but I like to give others a chance to pick the target...keeps things interesting. I appreciate the link though, I am sure there are others that don't know about it.

Good shooting, shootr, looks like a 99 from my 'puter screen.

:)

Okay Mav,

Finally got the Anschutz 1451ST target rifle dialed in at 100 yards with a BSA Sweet 22 3-9 X 40 scope. Shot the target at 100 yards, indoors this morning. We are fortunate to have a real nice 100 yard, indoor rifle range available. The way the wind is blowing, there's no way I could have held a group like this on an outdoor range at 25 yards, let alone 100. Besides, I couldn't see past 25 yards without a good scope on the rifle anyway.

Took me 5 targets to get the group centered on the crosshair of the target as I originally had the scope zeroed at 50 yards. I think if they would let us shoot anything but paper targets, I could possibly drive large headed upholstery tacks with this thing, at least at 50 yards and pretty consistently.

Here's my offering for this month's match - pretty sure it scores 100, but a lot of that was luck. Took 20 minutes just to get the target to stop swinging on the carrier before I could shoot it and another 20 minutes to get the 10 shots downrange. The nerves were pretty tense for the last 3 shots as this is the best I've ever been able to do since acquiring this rifle!

Thanks shootr!
First time I've ever had a .22 rifle that would even come close to a group like that!

All my 68 years I've wanted a decent .22 target rifle. A while back someone advertised this Anschutz 1451ST entry level target rifle for $400, but I managed to trade him a Sig Mosquito .22 handgun for it even up. It came without sights and after I got it home, I found out some bubba had attempted to drill and tap an already grooved receiver for a scope and botched it. The front set are almost an 1/8" to the left of the rear ones! The receiver and the muzzle end of the barrel is grooved with the European 11mm grooves for scopes or Olympic style open sights. The stock wasn't original either, and was poorly bedded so I had to open up the barrel channel and do a bit more inletting around the bedding pillar to get it to sit straight.

I found a set of Daisy air rifle sights - Avanti diopter micrometer rear and globe style front that would take the Lyman inserts and I also set up a BSA "Sweet .22" 3-9X40 scope on rimfire rings that I can switch back & forth.

One thing I finally learned is that it likes a fouled barrel better than a cleaned one. If it's squeaky clean, the first two or three shots will be low/left fliers but once it's got a bit of fouling, it puts 'em all in the same hole from 25 yards all the way out to 100 with target grade ammo and pretty doggone close to that with the el-cheapo bulk pack stuff too. Mind you this is on an indoor range. I don't have access to an outdoor one within reasonable driving distance so unlike some, I don't have to fight the flooding and the always present Kansas winds!

We have a real nice indoor combination 25 yard pistol/100 yard rifle range here in the Wichita area and they'll allow anything from .17 rimfire up to .375 H & H on the rifle range as long as it's not steel core or steel jacketed ammo.

It's really busy on the weekends, so I try to do all my shooting during the first part of the week and right when they open in the morning and I don't have to fight the crowds.

Sounds like you made a great trade for it and then had a lot of fun getting it dialed in. I enjoy tinkering and getting an old gun to shoot well and would be real happy with your results - they don't get any better!

There's just nothing like absolutely knowing that your riflfe and ammo will put it in the same hole shot after shot.

Yup my Kimber shoots much better with dirty barrel , inside also makes a huge difference since there is zero wind to contend with

Off the same forum, I grabbed an OLD Marlin model 81DL .22 bolt gun that had the early Marlin peep sight on it. I replaced that with a Williams and sold the Marlin sight for what I paid for the gun!

A bit of refinishing on the wood and it looks like a new rifle. Shoots almost as good as the Anschutz too.

Thing I really like about the Marlin even though it was made pre-WW2, it doesn't have any real collector value and I can tinker with it fearlessly. No D/T or grooves in the receiver, so it's relegated to my iron sights/plinker but it shoots shorts, longs or long rifles interchangeably in the magazine tube. Remington CB Shorts are so quiet I can hear the firing pin strike the cartridge and they make less noise out of that long barrel than a pellet gun.

My back yard, garden destroying, rabbit-bunny population is now dwindling rather than multiplying and the neighbors are none the wiser. The turkey-buzzards have discovered the buffet so I usually don't even have to clean 'em up. If there are any left after a couple of good freezes this coming winter, I'll keep 'em for eats, but right now, the buzzards eat good.

I might if the price was right
Considering that it was bubba'd and as a result, and obviously won't shoot straight as a result, I don't think it's worth much...but since you're a friend, i'd be willing to give you what you have in it. ;)

Well, let's see. I paid $300 for the Sig Mosquito, just over $100 for the Avanti diopter peep sight and globe front sight plus another $20 for the set of inserts for that front sight, plus $15 for the rings and another $125 for the scope. That would come to around $560 plus shipping and insurance to an FFL of your choice which would be around $35-40 so round it up to $600 -

But since you're a friend, and it's been bubba'd, I wouldn't want to cheat you, so I think I'll just keep it. Whadd'ya think? :D

Thanks, KSCCHTrainer; you're a good man, despite what everyone says about you. :p

Here's a target that I think gets under the wire as a 98. For the 100 yd unlimited class.

My standard fare: CZ 452, Federal 510 ammo, Weaver 3-9 x 30 AO scope.

This is a good competition, Mav. Shooting .22 LR at 100 yds teaches you a few things! I shot this late in the afternoon, sun at my back. Good lighting conditions. On several of the shots, I could see the bullet's flight path. Picked it up early, thinking way too high. Then, OK, it lobbed in there. Pretty neat!
