I travel from MI to TN several times a year and I need to know if I'm breaking any OH carry laws.

I looked for a restriction but couldn't find anything one way or another.

I have a MI carry permit which is honored in OH.

I carry my 1911 in the 4 O'clock position but I put a NAA 22 mag in the center console.

What I need to know is:

Can I have more than one loaded gun in my truck?

Can I carry a gun in the console while carrying another gun?

Thanks.

I'm going from memory, but i really think 1 loaded gun. (Loaded includes magazines, even if separate from the gun.) When we passed Concealed Carry, they forbid "Back-up" guns. At least originally.

Make sure to leave that big block "M" at the norther border also....:neener:

Contact the OHP [Ohio Highway Patroll]. They should be able to help. Also, maybe contact a c.c. firearms instructor [or two]. Good luck.

Here is a contact for you at Ohioans for Concealed Carry:

OFCC’s Chris Harben at 888-
881-2559, ext. 6

On a related note, if you are using Rt 23, Wyandot County deputies used to have a reputation of being especially interested in cars with Michigan tags - just sayin. And I would be leery of any advice I received from the OHP as they are known to be anti 2A.

There isn't anything in the ORC about how many guns you can carry. And our laws just changed so you can have a gun anywhere in the vehicle as long as you have a CHL, (loaded, unloaded, on the dash, in the door pocket, etc) thanks to SB17.

We are a must notify state though. So if you do get pulled over you have to notify the officer you have a chl and that you have firearms in your possession.

Carrying a handgun in a motor vehicle in an unconcealed manner probably isn't going to work very well for you.

This from the OFCC:

How do I carry in a motor vehicle?
Ohio requires a valid CHL in order to have a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle. If you have a CHL, a loaded firearm must be transported in one of the following ways:
1.In a holster secured on the person.
2.In a closed case, bag, box, or other container that is in plain sight and that has a lid, a cover, or a closing mechanism with a zipper, snap, or buckle, which lid, cover, or closing mechanism must be opened for a person to gain access to the handgun
3.The loaded handgun is securely encased by being stored in a closed glove compartment or center console, or in a case that is locked. A locked case does not need to be in plain sight (an unlocked case does).

and this from the AG's booklet:

Transporting in Motor Vehicles
The transportation in motor vehicles of loaded, concealed handguns by
licensed permit holders is permitted. You may not have a loaded handgun
in the vehicle if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

WARNING:
As of Sept. 30, 2011, concealed handgun licensees are no longer required
to carry handguns in any particular manner in a motor vehicle. However,
you should carry it safely and securely. The handgun should be carried so
it is not accessible to unauthorized persons. If you are planning on carrying
a concealed handgun while driving, have your concealed carry license and
another piece of valid government identification in your possession.

The ORC states:

2923.16 Improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.

(A) No person shall knowingly discharge a firearm while in or on a motor vehicle.

(B) No person shall knowingly transport or have a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle in such a manner that the firearm is accessible to the operator or any passenger without leaving the vehicle.

(C) No person shall knowingly transport or have a firearm in a motor vehicle, unless the person may lawfully possess that firearm under applicable law of this state or the United States, the firearm is unloaded, and the firearm is carried in one of the following ways:

(1) In a closed package, box, or case;

(2) In a compartment that can be reached only by leaving the vehicle;

(3) In plain sight and secured in a rack or holder made for the purpose;

If the handgun is not on your person it must be secured. The code is silent on multiple handguns.

OFCC hasn't updated their site. As of Sept 30th you can carry however you want. Leave it on the seat if you want while you're driving, who's going to get to it? Just me.

It bears mentioning again that all of teh above requirements are no longer in the law. They were removed in SB17 that was signed into law this summer.

None of this is in the current ORC either.

The following can be found on the Buckeye Firearms Association site and was authored by Ken Hanson:

"Change to Ohio's Car Carry Provisions

Effective Friday, Ohio no longer places explicit restrictions on how someone with a concealed carry license may carry a gun in a vehicle. In other words, Ohio joins the other 48 states allowing concealed carry. Keep in mind that just because Ohio no longer micro-manages vehicle carry does not mean that people are free from potential criminal charges. Firearms in a vehicle still may not be accessible to children, persons under firearm disability etc. Stated another way, if you are alone in your car, whatever you want to do is fine. If you have children in the car, you must carry the handgun in a manner that the children cannot access if you want to be free of potential criminal charges."
