rifle number 1..

this is is a 45 cal mowry. two piece stock. beautiful tiger stripe maple. browned barrel and furniture , buckhorn rear sight, either brass or german silver front blade sight. sn is 10211. that is on the top of the barrel . says mowry on the left. and 45 is stamped on the right..

rifle number 2..

this rifle is a full stock flintlock. also says mowrey on the barrel. although differant spelling.. also says olney texas.. on the other side says 58..
yes this is a 58 cal.. it has an interesting lock.. in that the rear trigger has to be set before you can cock the hammer.. simple notch and blade sights.
on this one the barrel and lock are blued. while the furniture is brass.

any info you might have or anyplace you might be able to direct me to.. would be greatly apreciated.

thanks.

Well the .45 Mowery is a Mowery that was made in Olney TX awhile back and made no longer...I have not see one in a steel receiver, I have seen them in brass receivers...
The Fintlock could have also been made by the same Company...
Both are fine rifles.

Having to set the rear trigger before you cock is a form of "double-set, single-phase". On some you can cock the hammer but not fire from an unset trigger. If you take the trigger out of the gun you will see that the front trigger only acts upon the rear trigger, releasing it under spring pressure to smack the rat tail on the sear of the lock. That Mowery 45 is a real nice looking gun, I've been looking for one like that for years now to no avail. The 58 looks like it was also made by Mowrey though it was usually a halfstock caplock similar to a hawken. Here is a thread of one: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?p=464468

I used to have a brass reciever cap lock like that in plain walnut, and wish i never sold it.

I like tha rocklock too, and consider you a pretty lucky guy for both.

Not long ago here, there was a thread on the main spring, or trying to get one for the cap lock. That is simple or hard to get depending on if you know what it looks like as there probably isn't a easy way to buy one, so care well for those guns as they are super nice from my point of view.

Primarily these days I just dabble around in rock locks so it appears as there is a bit of drool in my keyboard. I'ld just about do anything to steal that flinter off you, but these are hard times and I don't really steal stuff.

Wasn't any to sure exactly what the supposed queston was, seems you know all you need to.

mainspring

the mainspring on the mowreys is a big weakpoint.. my wife has broken two of them on that 45. the name of the place that baught all the parts when the one in tx went out of buisiness has them.. but they are un hardened. so you .. or at least i do . have to take it to a smith to be fitted and hardened. i have one left. i should probably order some more to have on hand. the problem is if you are listening or feeling for the second click when cocking the hammer. you can go way beond what the spring is capable of handling.. and snap.. broken main.. sucks.. as i said.. my wife is on her third in that gun.
i need to see if the smith i take it to can figure out some kind of stop without doing anything to the exterior of the gun.

the 58 mowrey

i just read that link about the mowrey at auction. he said the SN was in the 4000s somwhere.. that flint i have has a SN of 15.. so a very early model.. that is very cool. should probably get it apraised. somwhere.

Well Deer Creek Products bought all the parts I belive. I think they went out of business but you could give them a try. It seems they might have gone down with some peoples money as well. I think you might be best served to remove the spring and make several copies so the gun doesn't become a wall hanger.

yep. that was the place..

i was also wondering if a good smith might be be able to come up wiht a different kind of spring that would work better.. and not be as prone to breaking... would realy suck to have to put it on the wall . way to nice a gun to have to retire it..

Deer Creek is still in business as of this morning when I talked to them. I bought parts from them off and on for a about 2 years now, with no problems good people to deal with.
There was another place in Florida by the same name that went belly up.. PeashooterJoe..

There were two different Deer Creek Products, one in Indiana and one in Florida. The outfit in Indiana deals in black powder equipment and supplies. It's run as a family business and has been in business continuously for several years. They are very honest and hard working people who have been treating their customers right for as long as I can remember. Fine folks - they have never taken anyone's money nor failed to correct a problem to the customer's advantage.

The Florida company was a scam outfit that took people for a lot of money and hit the road. They've been out of business for a number of years. Don't confuse the Indiana company with the Florida company; they have nothing in common - nothing.

My mistake I didn't know there were two, I just read the business reviews of Deer Creek Products. I saw that they had no web page and put 2n2 together. Do they still sell the Mowrey kits?

Edit: Just called them and they do not sell the kits or finished rifles anymore. I was told they "...can't build anymore." but I didn't get any further into it. They do have parts though.
