This shotgun has reportedly been in my brother-in-law's family for an unknown number of years. It has been on his mantel for the past 25 years. My brother-in-law is deceased and the history of the gun is murky (non-existent). I hope someone will be able to provide some information regarding its age and maker. Any other sort of information or places to look for information would be appreciated. Thank You!!

Nice heirloom! Post this up in the Blackpowder forum (scroll down from the Shotguns Forum); lots of good info there.

If you're comfortable disassembling it, you can often find maker's or proofing marks on the underside of the barrels. These can help narrow down its origin.

You should also remove the butt plate. A lot of old timers put all sorts of crazy stuff back there, like hunting licenses, coins and names and addresses too.

Just from appearances probably a Belgian made double of an inexpensive for the time genere. You will likely find Belgian proof marks on the undersides of the barrels.

First thing to do, drop the rod down both tubes. The gun might still be LOADED. Then remove the barrels. Back action locks are an indication of manufacture post 1840 or so.
