I'm getting a very expensive match grade AR barrel and I'm looking for tips to avoid the scuff marks I got last time on relatively cheap stainless barrel when installing a tight slip-on gas block with Melonite coating. The barrel past the gas block is something in the .730-.740 range and the gas block would chatter along even if slid as square as possible. I think it was the slightly burred sharp ends of the set screw holes that marked the most last time.

All I can suggest is to make sure the inside of the gas block has no burrs or rough spots, and then coat the barrel and inside the gas block with some grease. Flush everything with brake parts cleaner when its locked in place.

I'd bet the stuff you got to lube your barrel nut threads would do the trick!

De-bur it first before you put it on?

And some grease to slick the barrel up should help too.

If the new barrel is stainless, probably any slight marks you do get can be repolished to match easily with a scotch-brite pad of the proper grade.

Use some 400 or 600 grit paper and oil and clean the inside of the gas block then grease up the barrel. It needs to be tight enough to tap in place.
