Hey all, I am not a gunsmith but I really want an ambi thumb safety on my carry gun as I am a lefty.

Is this something I can do myself? I looked at the gun, unloaded (of course), field stripped, and with grip panels removed. Didn't seem intuitive to me so I put it back together.

Just wondering, if it's actually easy I don't want to have to try to find a gunsmith in the People's Republic of Seattle.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer :)

My philosophy is that "Safety devices" be tackled by competent people, so if you are willing to read and learn a little to bring yourself into that category....... replacing the thumb safety is not that hard and you can probably do it.

The key is that you must remove the grip safety in order to see the Sear leg in order to fit the safety to it. When you are done .......the pistol must pass the "Click test" to be safe.

Now its your turn .............. learn the safety tests that all 1911 owners should know.....especially the Click test. And learn more about how the thumb safety works so you have a good understanding of what you are trying to accomplish. If you already know this stuff ......... removing the grip safety will give you the window you need to work with.

Trying to write someone a step by step .....is dangerous over the web, as you have no idea of the skill level of the other person and you could get someone hurt or killed. A little knowledge can be extremely dangerous with the 1911..........since a lot of parts will fit, but not necessarily be functioning safely.

I don't know how much help I have been , except to say be extremely careful installing this device........... I can't tell you how many people I have met that have replaced their thumb safety thinking they were golden ......and to my surprise the pistol failed the "Click Test" every time. They carried their 1911 cocked & locked ......... containing a Sear that was allowed maybe enough movement with the safety "ON" to be dangerous.

JF.
