Anyone here have insurance for their gun collections? I'm looking for a policy to cover guns/knives above my renter's policy, my regular insurer's premiums for riders for such things would be outrageous for what I need. Any previous experiance out there, from anyone?
Thanks
Chris

I bought additional firearms and computer insurance from Farmers' with my house policy. I was going to transfer it to American Family when I moved my car policy—and cut my bill in half—but American Family wouldn't write the policy extensions without a list of makes, models, and serial numbers. I'm still using Farmers' for my house policy; the next time the bill falls due, however, I'm going to call the N.R.A.: I've heard it offers policies that don't require registration.

Does anyone know of any homeowners insurance that "DOES NOT HAVE A GUN EXCLUSION"?

State Farm will only cover $3,000 worth of firearms. If I want more coverage, I have to pay a higher premium.

SAFECO and Fireman's Fund, in this area at least, have such policies. I would think they would offer similar policies nationwide.

Each company has several different policies with different features. Get a competent multiple-lines agent who wants your business, and have him find you some choices.

Never pay for riders or add-ons if you don't have to.

I added some sort of rider for an additional $5k of coverage from St Farm. NRA insurance also is good (so far!).

I can only base this on one personal experience, but the NRA insurance is worse than worthless. They are difficult to deal with, slow to respond, and gave me more red tape than my other policies.

If you think the NRA is quick to pull their pants down, grab their ankles and walk backwards into a room when they want to comprise on gun control legislation wait until you see how quick they throw every possible obstacle in your way for resolving the claim.

I think you will find most policies do cover firearms, most of the time the problem is not that they are excluded but that there is a limit to the dollar amount of coverage a base policy provides. There are similar limits on cash, jewelry, etc.

To increase your firearms coverage you have to add a rider which often requires discriptions including serial numbers. The NRA policy does not require that on average priced pieces but it does on pieces valued at over $2000.00 if I remember correctly.

Just make sure you read your policy carefully, no surprises that way.

I've insured my gun collection with three different companies.............

and all worked it the same way. Each has been a rider on my home insurance policy, required each gun to be properly identified on the policy, cost in addition to the basic policy, and was for fire AND theft. Seems to be pretty standard way to go. Good shooting;)
