I recently ran across a Interarms Mark X chambered in 223. It is a used rifle in a local gun store near where I live. I loved the look of the gun and feel of the action, very smooth. Has a laminated green colored stock equipped with a Nikon Prostaff 3x9 scope. I went back a couple days later and paid a few dollars and laid the gun away.

Does anyone have any information on these rifles? Is this what some people are referring to as a “ mini Mauser “? I’ve wanted a good bolt action 223 and this one seems to fit the bill.

Thanks!

It is made by Zastava. There are Mark X (full size Zastava M70) and Mini Mark X (Zastava M85), 223 would be the Mini Mark X, so called Mini Mauser, at one time sold by Charles Daly and Remington (799) as well, not a true mauser action like the full size Mark X, Mini is a push feed, extractor is not a mauser style claw extractor, but a tiny one, weak and hard to find part if boke. I had a Remington 799 mini mauser in 7.62x39 and the extractor chipped only 50 rnds or so. Lucky to get it fixed under warranty, sold it! I would not recommend a mini mauser (Mini Mark X) but the full size Mark X is a true mauser action and good.

This particular rifle has Mark X on the receiver. Is it labeled mini somewhere on the receiver I am not seeing? Or is that a name that’s been used in referencing this particular caliber? Do you have any idea the years these rifles were produced?

Thanks

I guess the "Mini" Mauser is also marked as Mark X without "mini" on it. I don't have an Interarms, google and find pictures. It is indeed a mini like my Remington 799.

Interarms was sold or out of business over 15 yrs ago, maybe over 20 yrs ago. Someone can check Gun Bible book to tell for sure.

The mini is a push feed, as mentioned. Still not a bad gun. You will be happy with it, they are usually good shooters-make sure it is free floated.

As a happy owner of a full sized Mark X in 30/06 I always wanted the mini in .223. I am uninformed regarding any difference in the action design. The fullsize I own is a high quality firearm that has performed flawlessly for decades.
As soon as I picked the rifle up and shouldered it, it just had a good feel. The feel of the action made me think of the 1903’s I have. Smooth and solid. I’ve been wanting a 223 platform bolt gun so I think this one will be good for me. Thanks for the info.

I have the charles daly version in left hand. With a 50grn bullet it shoots great ~1". With a 55 is starts to spread them around 2-4". The action on mine is stiff on the throw and wags like a dogs tail when the bolt is all the way back. But the trigger is adjustable to be VERY nice, the blueing is superb, and with the right handload I can do 5 shots under 3/4 inch. (if I take a break halfway through, the thin barrel heats up quick and accuracy deteriorates)

I have about 600 rounds through mine and have not had any extractor issues. The importer changes every few years, but currently I believe it is century arms. And at shot this year zastava had a booth and appears to becoming their own importer.

I have shoot three different genuine mini mausers. two in 223 and one in 222. the two in 223 did not feed and had to be used as a single shot. the 222 feed well but had receiver bridge problems and the scope mount needed lot of shimming. all three were accurate though. just my experiences, yours might be different. dc

Thanks for the info! I was looking to work up some handloads when I finally pick her up. I have not found a whole lot of info on these guns. Do you know what your twist rate is? Also what powder does your rifle like best with?

I do know the one I’m getting has a 20” barrel. I’ve alwat been partial to Hogdon 4895. I have always used this with my Garrand and 1903’s and have had excellent results. I noticed in my Lee reloading manual that 4895 was listed with several grain bullets.

Thanks again

there is a nice long thread discussing the mini-mauser here https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/5223316/all/Mini_mauser_trigger tells how to adjust the trigger and discusses some of the issues people had sorting them out and what shot well for them. (upshot, it's a slow twist barrel. light bullets work better)
One reason the short, light bullets work better is the older .223 guns dont have a NATO spec chamber and the lead is set up for 55gr. I would avoid trying to chamber XM855 in one of these, though if the OP is mostly doing handloads, this shouldnt be a major issue for him.

I picked up my Interarms Mark X in 223 today. Our weather was not the best today but I was able to put 20 rounds down range. I really like this lil gun. It’s a blast to shoot and is fairly accurate with 55gr Armscor ammo I bought when I picked it up.

My question is, on the receiver it has Alexandria Virginia, Interarms and Manchester England on the receiver just behind where it is stamped Mark X. On the frame near the trigger assembly it has Made in Yugoslavia. I understand the made in Yugoslavia stamp but what are all the other makings? Why Virginia and England?

The Interarms importer was located in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, close to the Potomac river.

I had one but it was taken by natural disaster, divorce.
It was the most beautiful rifle I owned at that time & unfortunately the
stock broke completely in two right behind the bolt, it was a 7mm Mag & that was the
smallest area of the stock of course, I suppose the caliber caused it to break but it was
beautiful, I remember that the most.
Plus accurate as heck.
