Interesting night, could have been a lot worse!!

I've never had a problem racking a pump while prone, the barrel does rise but comes right back down on target.

You and me both, brother. If that wont back him down, he's either drunk, insane, methed-out, fill-in-the-blank, or any combination of the four.

The end result of that encounter wont be pretty!

If you think 30 minutes is bad, you've never had to rely on the Seattle PD. I used to work at a nightclub and every saturday at midnight these worthless pieces of sh.. would break into about 6 cars in the upper parking lot and sometimes steal the car, always steal what's inside. I got tired of helping people file police reports, so I decided to watch the parking lot one night. Sure enough midnight rolls around and a gold taurus pulls up and a few men get out and start breaking into cars. I call the police, and tell them there is a robbery in progress, explain the situation, describe the car and the men.... wait... wait... wait... 30 minutes later I call back. "Sir we're dealing with shootings and stabbings and other things that take priority, you're just going to have to wait"... So I told her that I had a 12 guage in hand and if they didn't get there fast, there was going to be a shooting. She didn't like that.

Anyway, 15 more minutes pass... One of the men warns the others that the cops are coming. They all pile into the taurus and sit there. Two cruisers pull in right next to the car that I described (lisense plate and all) and talk to eachother. They don't bother the men in the taurus. Five minutes pass, and the cruisers leave.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Seattle PD anymore. That's the fastest response time I've ever gotten from them. 45 minutes. It's usually 3 hours, unless you threaten to shoot the perp.

Yeah, you gotta love some of the police forces. Back home, If you live in the slums forget about it. You won't see a cop there and should there be a need to call them, don't waste your time or cellphone minutes cause they wont show up. They might not even show up to a murder scene so forget burglary or whatever.

But when you're walking down a street minding your own business, they're everywhere. I've had cops stop me, guns pointing at my head and everything. And you know what they say? "we're just doing our job"... funny things is.... why don't they do their "job" when there's a suspicious scum wondereing around looking for someone to mug..... Heh... a little shake down to make some cash from the law abiding citizens.....

cocking a shotgun is more intimitating than the sound of racking the slide on a handgun or anything else

I would say because it is a more audible and discernable sound. But if one knows the sound of a 1911 slide closing with a cartridge, I imagine that would put the fear of god in them as well. Some outopistols do have a very audible and distinct sound when the slide is drawn back and released on a round. Large S&W autos come to mind.

If said thug is in your home, I imagine the slide closing on an auto or hammer being pulled back on a wheelgun would get their attention in an otherwise tranquil and quiet environment.

In my house they won't hear a thing before bang. All HD weapons are kept condition one.

Any BG who doesn't lose their mud when they hear an unexpected shotty racking must have some enormous cahones. :D

Sounds like you handled the situation well.

It's nice to hear about people taking responsibility for their own safety. These days too many people think the police are their own personal bodyguards. To me being prepared for a home invasion robbery is like being prepared for a fire or natural disaster. It just seems like common sense.

"Dang! I had my heart set on a semi-auto shottie. Having to pump is just a tactical problem. Maybe I can record the sound and play it somehow."

I disagree. I've fired 3 high quality semi auto shotguns and I've had FTFs on 2 of those 3. THAT is a tactical problem. I never had a problem with my mossberg pump. The FTFs on the shottie are especially bad because you don't notice them right away. On a pistol you'll probably notice your jam right away and be able to go to work on it - with the shottie I didn't even know until I pulled the trigger and only got a click.

Progun and Leon:

That would be Apocalypse Now and goes like:
Robert Duvall:
"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory.."

Re: Seattle PD Response Time.

exp, I think that I read a story kind of like this on one of the other forums. It goes like this:

An old man woke up one night, hearing noises outside his house. He looked out the window and saw four men breaking into his garden shed. He called the police and told them what he saw. They said, "Sir, all officers are busy. You'll just have to wait."
He hung up. He waited five min. and called again. Again the dispatcher said, "Sir, please stop calling. All of our officers are busy. One will be with you shortly."
He hung up again. He decided to call one more time. "911, how may I help you?" the dispatcher answered. "Hi" he said, "this is the gentleman that called twice a couple of minutes ago. You don't need to send the police out here now. I just shot and killed all the guys breaking into my shed." He hung up. Five minutes later, his front yard was full of cop cars, the swat team, and 5 local reporters.
Just goes to show you.

This isn't, as far as I know, a true story, but I guess it could be. :)

If the bad guy isn't convinced to leave after hearing my 500 go to condition one, it is the last thing he will ever hear. I must admit, I rack the slide for psychological (sic) reasons only, I keep a round in the chamber all the time. The little tab behind the trigger guard lets me rack the slide even though the shotgun is loaded and "hammer cocked" so to speak.
