Iron sights on Remington Model 7?

I'm considering a Remington Model 7 as the basis for my "all purpose rifle". (I'm drawn to it's light weight, overall length under 40", and barrel length of 20". Note that I carefully avoid naming that rifle my "scout rifle" so as not to offend Scout Rifle {tm} officiandos.)

One factor in my decision is whether it - in its current production model - has either iron sights from the factory (even a bead) or at least is drilled & tapped for them. Yes, I do plan to add a scope, but I want iron sights (again that could be ghost ring with a bead) as backup in case the scope fails in a SHTF/TEOTWAWKI event.

If not, is there another current production bolt rifle in 7mm08 or .308 of at least approximately those specifications (6.25 lbs, <40", 20" barrel) that have iron sights or is drilled/tapped for them?

Model 7

From what I can tell the new ones do not have iron sights on them. Mine does so you might could find one of the older ones that has them. I got mine about 13 years ago in 6mm and have loved it it shoots great and one of the best things I like about it is when I walk through the woods the barrel does not go about my head but mine has a 18" barrel. It is light and easy to carry shoots great. But from what I have heard avoid the SAUM in the model 7 because of the recoil.

Get a Savage scout rifle.. Just don't mount the scope! Lightwieght, Accurate everything you are looking for. They are ( so I've heard ) still avalible from the custom shop.

Can someone confirm whether the model 7 is a controlled round feed? and should this matter to me? I am also considering a 7. What are the drawbacks compared to a 700 in the same caliber of 308?

Neither the Model 7 nor the 700 are controlled feed; both are push feed ... and that hasn't mattered to me. I have both a Model 7 and a 700 in .308. The former is my all purpose hunting rifle. I put it in an H.S. Precision stock and mounted a Leupold VariX-II 2-7X compact on it. It is a great gun for field use; I love the short action and comparatively short barrel. It's light and quick pointing. I don't reload .308 yet, and I've not found a factory load that achieves MOA accuracy, but it will go under two inches at 100 yards with just about everything, and that's accurate enough for the gun's purpose. I'm very pleased with it.

In contrast, my 700 is a VSSF (no longer available in .308) that I had accurized and bedded. It shoots under 3/4 MOA regularly with 175 grain Federal Gold Medal Match ammo. I use it for long-range target shooting. Different gun for different application.

I'm a Model 7 fan. Bought another in .243 for my eldest son. It makes a fantastic general purpose rifle.

I’ve got a Rem Mod 7 MS (Mannlicher Stock) in .350 Rem and it has iron sights. Really makes a great timber Elk rifle, and it’s surprisingly accurate due to the short stiff barrel.

I’ve thought of getting another one in 7-08 for deer. Maybe when my boy gets a little older I’ll get one. They really are handy rifles.

Took me a minute to understand "controlled feed", but yeah, now I understand.

I guess Rugers, Brownings and others are claw extractors. Rem is not.

Nice to hear that it's not entirely necessary.

Gotta say, though, that Ruger M77 Mark II is a fine looking gun, even if a bit heavier than I've wanted.

So is the CZ (I own one of their 452 in .22LR), but I'm not fond of the rnd it shoots. Not so available here.

The Rem 7 Youth is nice, but I'm a tall guy, so I fear the LOP wouldn't be right for me (even if the 7mm08 rnd would be fine).

I'm glad this thread has expanded from the original question. Keep expanding.

Let's talk about short rifles (~40" mas o menos) with short barrels (20" or less), with short actions in commonly available (US) rnds (.308, 7mm08) that will take deer, elk, (parasitic humans in a pinch during SHTF/TEOTWAWKI), etc.

Back to the original question / post. An interesting rifle to me is the Ruger M77 International in 308.

Mannlicher style stock, open sights, 18 in barrel. Put an apeture sight on this and you have a modern day Enfield. Of course you need to like that type of stock to appreciate the gun fully. I start to consider this gun right around the the full moon. But then again I start to consider the Rem Model 7 around the new moon. Oh yeah and don't forget the Springfield Scout 18" semi auto wonder on every second Tuesday of the month.........oops did I say "Scout"?

Nematocyst-870, the only diff between the regular and youth model 7 is the stock. You could look for a factory takeoff from someone like me--who bought an aftermarket stock (sorry, you can't have mine ... I just put put it on my son's "youth" model .243). They are easy to change out. And if you're building up a GP rifle, you might want an H.S. Precision or some other stock anyway, in which case I'd buy the youth model simply because it's less expensive.
