Is 6.5 creedmore here to stay?

I'll be using it for range play mostly. Already have dies for 6.5 CM. My son has a Thompson center 6.5CM.
That makes a lot of sense since you already have a foot into the 6.5 door. That’s a solid move!

Since selling a 7MM mag, my current rifles (besides 5.56/.223) are 30-30, .308, and 7.52*39. I’m still wrapping my head around what direction to go next. I was hoping that since I really like my SFAR (.308), that Ruger would come out with a 6.5 CM upper that I could plug and play. Then I’d be more ready to expand into a bolt gun.

Despite my previous comments, a 6.5 is definitely in my near future. Yes, I like the .308. I like that even when things get tight, I can still find ammo. Everyone makes .308 in one flavor or another, but 6.5CM really has me curious.

With rifles like the Ruger American line, the cost of entry is pretty low these days. The cost of a Ruger American is less than my monthly shooting budget. The only thing I'm apprehensive about is getting into ANOTHER caliber.

Yeah i find way more 308 than 6.5's. 243 is in the middle of finds lol.

Remember .243 can become 6.5 CM ;) . I have both 7.62x51mm and 6.5 CM each has it's advantages and disadvantages ,NO different than any #2 other cartridges in comparison . I can however GUARANTEE THAT YOU will have that Excrement eating grin plastered all over YOUR mug , when that 6.5 CM kiss each other on the target . I still do :)
I shoot a fair number of 7.62x51 AR's and M14's along with .308 Bolt Rifles ,still popping MY M1Garands in .30 Cal always will while I'm able . Personally MY most satisfying builds are #2 of a dozen AR 15's and the 6.5 CM. As Teddy was quoted as saying, ACCURATE RIFLES ARE INTERESTING .
BUILD a GOOD ONE . I used Aero Precision platform and am tickled pink with the results . Norma Factory Golden Target 143 gr.
I needed cases as I had 0 and bought a few boxes of Norma Golden Target for $22.50 a box , ABGuns,MI. , Had a sale several months ago . I figured empty once fired cases were going for $0.60 per case and who knows who's case . NO brainer for ME.

July 2023 6 5 CM first run Norma Golden Target.jpg

I think the 6.5 will be better for my cervical spine issues too. I'll take my sons 6.5 bolt action out and see how my neck does. I load my 30.06 light for the range. I save the full power loads for hunting.

YOU and everyone else can read the rest of it here on the link . Recoil in an AR is laughable ,as is with a .308 ,only more so .

Whether you hunt deer, pronghorn, feral hogs, coyotes, or even elk and moose, you might want to shoot 6.5 Creedmoor. This is the rifle cartridge version of the New England Patriots — the consistent winner that people love to hate. Creedmoor here, Creedmoor there, Creedmoor this, Creedmoor that… Are there really good reasons why you should shoot 6.5 Creedmoor? Oh yeah. But the most important are probably these three.

  • Perfect bullet weight and power for deer-sized game.
  • Less recoil than most popular deer cartridges at a similar price point.
  • Ideal for long-range target shooting with long barrel life and minimal wind deflection.

The Truth About the 6.5 Creedmoor

Here’s the honest truth: the 6.5 Creedmoor is NOT the world’s greatest rifle round. There, I've said it. But somebody needed to because the 6.5 Creedmoor can’t stop alocomotive, can’t see through walls, and isn’t even faster than every other speeding bullet. But it can leap over tall buildings in a single bound.

Seriously, the 6.5 Creedmoor has become a hot property because it is efficient, light on recoil, and long on downrange performance. Hornady engineered it from the 30 T/C case in 2007 to deliver everything long-range target shooters wanted in a cartridge. Hunters later discovered it delivered much of what they needed, too. With the Hornady 143-grain ELD-X bullet, this Creedmoor can deliver more energy at 1,000 yards than the 300 Win. Mag. can with a 180-grain spire point bullet. Enthusiasm for the 6.5 Creedmoor took a few years to warm up, but once it reached critical mass, the little round took off like Super Cartridge without a cape. Here are several reasons why you might want to shoot 6.5 Creedmoor:

As long as men continue to wear their hair in buns, the 6.5 will be available.

In all seriousness, I think the 6.5 will eventually fade out (though not disappear entirely) when some other latest-greatest comes along. The .308, of course, will continue being the .308.

I wouldn't not buy a 6.5 because I was afraid the cartridge would eventually disappear - there are simply too many guns made for it for that to happen in our lifetimes - but I do expect it to someday seem passé: the parachute pants of the gun world.

Thinking about this for comparison sake, the .45 GAP came about around 2 decades ago and it was fairly quickly a flop and it is still around. I think the more highly suspect 6.5 CM will still be around after most of us are dead. 6.5 CM has been hugely successful compared to the .45 GAP.

It's here to stay at least in my small corner of the world. I've let many a hardened "Caliber" man try my bolt actions and AR configured rifles at local events / clubs. Almost all of them converted after their first season with it. And actively choosing it over our traditional 308.

In ten years, something slightly different but essentially the same will be introduced, there will be bunch of youtube videos made about it, and people bored with their 6.5 creedmore will switch.

Meanwhile, the 308 and 30-06 will still be doing what they do.

They already have come along PRC's but who cares ?. Just like 7 Rem Mag in 1964 when I bought mine ,oh that's just a fad it will go away . I still own MY original 3000L Mauser and it looks nearly as good today as it did then :) Only NOW it's worth far far and away more $$$$'s than it did then .

I personally like guns which shoot small groups ,don't care if it's 25 yd. or 1500 yd. , some cartridges do it better and more efficient than others .

The 6.5 Creedmoor is just one of those cartridges ,not unlike the 6.5 Swede they just fill a necessary void very effectively .

Do You realize the most versatile cartridge to ever hunt African game is still the 7mm Mauser aka 7x57mm . I wonder how many hunters said oh the larger 500 Jeffery or 505 Gibbs will eclipse it . Not even the 8x57mm aka 8mm Mauser did ,nor the 577 or 700 Nitro express's did .

Nope, flash in the pan, just like all these other new fangled brass cased rifle rounds.

I'll take my powder in a horn, my bullets round, and my spark from flint, as God intended. Anything else is just Hornady hoodwinking folks into buying components and rifles they don't need.

The 7mm Magnum is basically retro-cool at this point. It went through its boom phase, it went through its bust phase, and now it's kind of like having a stuffed marlin in your rumpus room: kitsch, but all your friends are secretly jealous.
