Is a resident VA permit good in TN if no longer a VA resident?

Is an unexpired VA resident CCW valid in TN (a reciprocity state) if the permit holder is technically not a VA resident anymore?

I've looked at the relevant Virginia code and haven't found anything that revokes or suspends the permit if one is no longer a resident, so would it be safe to assume that the permit is still good and recognizable in TN?

Any VA/TN CCW experts out there care to comment?

I'd do that, but I'm only going to be in TN for a short time and won't be taking up residency there either. It will also probably be less time than it takes to get a non-resident permit issued.

Guess why I am asking is since I got my CCW I am very careful not to lose it. There was time when I would carry in a dangerous area illegally. I don’t do that anymore for fear of losing my CCW status. I live near and work in the most dangerous city in MD and I just hope it won’t be my undoing. I use to believe that it was better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 but the bottom line is a conviction will amount to a loss of CCW anywhere in the country. If CCW does not pass in MD this will not become my permanent home.

That’s why I would definitely be sure that you are legal in TN.

I understand and agree completely. That is why I'm asking on here to see if anybody has run into a similar situation.

RKC, You have to be a resident of somewhere . If you're temporarily out of VA for whatever reason, your residency doesn't automatically terminate, especially if you intend to return. My gut tells me that such a residency would be reasonable for oh,say 60 days or so, and you could continue to carry in both VA and TN. Beyond that you'd be stretching and should probably get a TN license.

IANAL, and one may advise you differently, but this passes the common sense test for me.

..., so would it be safe to assume that the permit is still good and recognizable in TN?
IANAL ... but I was an English major once. Is there some part of "resident" that you don't understand? "Technically" has nothing to do with it. Either you are a resident of VA, or you are not. If you are not, the prudent thing to assume is that your "resident" permit is NOT valid.

VA issues non-resident permits. Why not just contact the state police and ask if they can convert your permit to non-resident for the unexpired duration?

Well, I was once an English major too and from reading the Virginia code, the only residency requirement they specify is at the time of application. There is no wording that implies revocation of the permit if the resident becomes a non-resident.

I have contacted ths VSP and am waiting for a reply. However, I'd imagine that even if they would convert my resident permit into a non-resident, the time window I would have needed it in TN would have past.

I hear you ... and I wasn't trying to be insulting. It's just hard to imagine a "resident" permit remaining valid after you are no longer a resident. It might, but your original post seemed to take the approach that you'd be safe to ASSUME it remains valid. Given the logical disconnect involved it seems to me that the prudent course is to ASSUME that it is not valid, until provided with documentation to the contrary.

Hawkmoon,

No worries, I have a thick skin. :)

I did hear back from the VSP and it turns out that I was correct after all. Since there is no provision for revocation of the permit for change of address, the permit is valid until expiration!

Time to dig out that old Milt-Sparks... :D
