I made eagle scout in 2002 but just got my court of honer this last weekend .
listing to the speaker talk about how only 2% of all boys in boy scouts made eagle i was wondering how many people at THR made eagle scout .

No but I got my Marksmanship merit badge and our Troop did get to shoot each year at summer camp (and we do need to keep to firearm related discussions here, so I'm trying to paddle the canoe that direction).
Congrats on earning your Eagle. It is indeed an honor. Did YOU earn your Marksmanship merit badge too (or anything else related to firearms, e.g. Archery)?

I did probably six or seven years ago (with silver palm)... I was fortunate enough to be in a troop with a lot of resources and a lot of heavily involved adult leaders. That made it a lot easier.

I really enjoyed the Boy Scouts, particularly the time I got to spend with my dad. It's especially important to me now that he has passed away (a little more than two years ago).

i was just intereste how many gun owners and hunters were eagle scouts . most off what i learned as a kid about firearms and safety came from scouting . i earned rifle shootgun shooting and marksmanship at camp avondale

I'm a Quartermaster, which is the eagle equivalent in Sea Scouts. However, the official recognition card from BSA HQ still said "Eagle Scout". I also earned my marksmanship merit badge, at camp Brinkley.

Eagle in 1994, if I recall correctly.

Never could get rifle shooting merit badge, I was always doing way too many badges at camp (might be why I got the eagle with PLENTY of badges to spare)

I did however get shotgun shooting. Very proud of that one- I never used a shotgun before that course and I hit a double at the end.

For some reason, archery never interested me. I loved shooting at the range though, just never had the patience to go through the course for the badge (wish I had though).

Regret it everyday of my life that I did not complete my service project to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout (ask my wife, she can tell you this). They spoke so much about the reget men have in not obtaining it, and I am one who openly admitts it.

I was a cub scout from the very day I was eligible, Weblo, attended the 75th Anniversary National Jamboree by EARNING my way, and obtained the rank of Life scout with only 3 merit badges and a service project to complete. I lived life through scouting and it is a part of me that will never leave me. Then things went south as a teenager, new scoutmaster, a got a Z28, and stupidity set in.

I still to this day can recite the Oath, Promise, and tell you what the two stars on the first class badge represent (truth and knowledge btw, find a scout that knows that!). I'm am not your typical leadership type, but because of the lessons I learned through scouting, I have been able to lead men and women in business, and in moments of emergencies just by reacting and not thinking (heart attacks/CPR, unconcenious car victims, fractures in the middle of no where, and much worse that I pray never to have to deal with again).

There are two organizations that my wife knows that I will ALWAYS support and if we were to hit the lottery, I'd dump LOTS of money into, and one being the BSA. The concept of walking into a troop meeting in some unknowing town/troop and handing a check for a huge amount of money to buy gear and stuff with, makes me giddy just thinking about.

As for guns, yeah, I shoot .22 targets, shotguns with skeet, and went hunting with the scouts. We were taught laws, the 4 rules by the Game Warden of my area, and passed the state rifle cert. program back then.

After one year in the boy scouts and not recieving one badget and the only thing we did was sit in a church and pray. I quit figured I would learn more by doing than reading abotu it in a book. That and they way they are handeling things now in the scouts my son will not be getting involved. If my son is going to get lost with an adult It will be with me and I will not be lost.

They are getting lost, struck by lighting and made to sit in a field in the virginia summer sun and heat untill they pass out from dehydradition. This is not my idea of a well orginized place to have my child.

I made it to

Star or Life, whatever is the one right below Eagle.
I really regret not making Eagle, my family wasn't very supportive
and girls were becoming more and more tempting.
I worked at a BSA camp near Lake George NY one year,
The beauty of upstate NY is something I still dream about.
To bad rotten left wingers control NY or I would return, at least to camp out.
I remember drinking water right from the stream, shooting, eating edible plants
live trapping and catching really cool animals, bitten by non poisonous snakes, the practical
jokes.

'92 here...
It's a funny little club.
You'll spend the rest of your life meeting really decent guys every so often, and you may be fast friends with them before the topic comes up.
When you find out that your new friend is an eagle too, you'll probably think "well, that figures".

Don't forget your knots. Nobody else in the world knows how to tie knots.

In response to a previous poster.

The Boy Scouts of America is the greatest positive outside influence a boy can have. It teaches hard work, self reliance, honesty, familiarity with the outdoors and all the other virtues and skills that are increasingly lacking in this screwed up world.

The friends I made and the lessons I learned as a Scout and then as a Scoutmaster will live with me forever.

I am truly sad that ignorant people continue to demonize and unfairly criticize this organization. Is it perfect? Of course not, but it is the only remaining hope for any kind of return to sanity for our young male population.

This society is headed for the bottom and is heading there quickly. The Scouts and the thousands of volunteers who care deeply about helping to turn young boys into young men deserve better.

Eagle, '98.
I spent all year looking forward to shooting .22s and trap at camp every summer.

Well, I was never a Boy Scout at all and am now too old. But I'm an Asst. Scoutmaster FWIW, and trying to teach my almost completely gun-ignorant scouts about shooting in a safe and friendly environment.

I'm not, but my middle son is (from 2003, I think), and my youngest son is working on his Eagle project.

Congratulations.

No, I was 2 merit badges short, and I regret not putting in the little effort to finish. After all, I did most of it. That is one reason it's 2% I guess. Again, congratulations. It is something you will always be proud of. :)

Eagle in 2003...Tough job but I had to. My old man was (still is) the scoutmaster for my old troop back home. He told me that he'd buy me a car (a used car but a car) if I picked up Eagle and that if I didn't...well he never exactly covered it but I had a good feeling the remainder of my time in ND would be painful (I had already entered in the USMC Delayed Entry Program and had a ship date for Boot Camp).

Congratulations!

Made Eagle myself in 1997. Too bad i have to have a little gold card signed by Bill Clinton that i'm compelled to hold onto forever.

Other than that, it was fantastic. Greatest trip of my life was w/ the scouts down to the Florida Sea Base. Spent 8 days sailing on an 80 ft wooden schooner, manually lifting sails w/ 5 other guys. Very old school.

Never made it to the Philmont Scout Ranch, though. Gonna have to remedy that one of these years.

I was one of those kids that always cut up and acted foolish during the meetings, never got past Tenderfoot, and dropped out after one or two years. But the short time I was in, I learnd a lot. First aid, values, survival skills, etc... I was a lost cause, but my youngest son is now starting year two in Boy Scouts, just made Tenderfoot, and is 3 requirements away from Second Class, and already has 10 merit badges. In the past year his troop had two guys make Eagle, so we're working hard on it. My oldest son was more llike me....

I was a Life scout, OA, Sr patrol leader (3 merit badges and service project short of Eagle) at 14. We had a great troop, with very active parents and community.

My mom took a job in another state. The troop sucked, I got a girlfriend, and scouting slipped away. I didn't have the maturity or discipline to follow through. Lesson learned.

Eagle Scout 1987
USN 1988-1994

I enjoyed my time as an asst scoutmaster. I used to teach rifle and shotgun merit badges in our troop. I used to really enjoy teaching the scouts to load and shoot my traditional Black powder rifle as well.

:raises hand:

1988

Still involved as an adult leader/merit badge counselor too.

I'm this close to being able to being a counselor for the rifle shooting merit badge. (waiting for my NRA credentials)
