I was flipping through a gun mag yesterday, and I saw that Speer was putting out a 210gr .41 Mag gold dot cartridge! I was especially delighted when the same bullet was added to the components section as well. Woo hoo! And I just started reloading! This means no problems for me finding ammo. Looks like I've got something new to feed my 8 7/8" 57. Just when there's more companies loading for the 10mm, Speer does this for the .41 Mag.

Did they list the velocity?

210 grains at 1400+ feet per second is "full house" .41 Mag; stout stuff. Winchester Silvertips are 175 grains at 1250 feet per second, which is pretty mild.

210 grains at 1300 or so FPS would be just right, I think.

Heck yes I am!

I haven't made an order from Midway in many months but there are a few hundred of those babies waiting in my shopping cart for when I do.

Speer bullets have always shot well in my 41's.

I wonder how the new bullet compares to the XTP 210 in price?

Midway's out of stock at the moment, expecting new shipment 5/30

Here's what I got from the Speer site:
41 Magnum Gold Dot® Hunting Ammunition

For 2004, Speer adds the 41 Magnum to its popular Gold Dot Hunting line of handgun ammunition. A new Gold Dot bullet was designed from the ground up for this cartridge.
Gold Dot 41 Magnum ammunition is loaded with a 210 grain Gold Dot hollow point that is tuned to 41 Magnum velocities. The new load produces 1280 ft/sec from a 4-inch vented test barrel and approximately 1350 ft/sec from a 6-inch revolver barrel. That’s close to 850 ft-lbs muzzle energy!
Gold Dot 41 Magnum ammunition is suitable for game up to large deer.

FEATURES & BENEFITS
• Brand-new Gold Dot hollow point bullet
— Patented* 21st Century technology for today’s handgun hunters
• Uni-Cor® technology
— True bonded-core construction virtually eliminates core-jacket separations
• Cavity tuned to 41 Magnum velocities
— Excellent expansion and high retained weights
• Nickel-plated brass cartridge case
— Provides the durability for real-world hunting conditions
• famous CCI® Magnum primers
— Sure-fire ignition under harsh conditions
• Low-flash propellant

PART NO. DESCRIPTION
23996 41 Magnum 210 Gr. Gold Dot Hollow Point - 20 per box; 500 per case

and then for the bullet:

Gold Dot® Component Bullet for 41 Magnum Shooters

Reloaders have been asking for a modern expanding bullet for the 41 Magnum. Speer reacts with a brand new Gold Dot hollow point bullet for this popular Magnum cartridge.
The patented* Gold Dot process creates the hollow point cavity in two steps, allowing Speer engineers superb control over expansion, retained weight, and retained length. The finished cavity is tuned to the velocity potential of the 41 Magnum.
This new 210 grain bullet is ideally suited for hunting game up to the size of large deer. It is also very accurate, so it’s a great choice for metallic silhouette competition, too.
Gold Dot has proved itself the leader in law enforcement and for handgun hunting. Now, 41 Magnum shooters can join the Gold Dot Team.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

• Uni-Cor® construction
— True bonded-core bullet virtually eliminates jacket separation, and gives high
retained weights, commonly in excess of 95 percent
• Cavity tuned to 41 Magnum velocities
— Reliable expansion over the range of 41 Magnum barrel lengths
• Two-step cavity formation
— Allows full expansion without over-expansion

4430 41 Magnum (.410") 210 Gr. Gold Dot Hollow Point - 100 per box

There was another thread about this topic, but I didn't see what it was about until I posted. I didn't even expect speer to come out with a new .41 round, but I'm glad they did!

Excited?

I'm mildly excited. I've got 3 boxes of loaded GDs coming along with 3 boxes of bullets. They are somewhat more expensive than XTPs. About the same price as Nosler's 210grJHP. I'll have to get off my duff, breakout a bunch of different .41Magnums, my chrono, and spend a couple days testing the new offerings. Well, maybe tommorrow:D

I'm also excited about the Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter BISLEY i just put on lay-awake to go with the one that has the regular plowhandle grip. I tell ya, The last year has been good for fans of the .41Magnum. I'll have to put in a bunch of overtime just to keep up with all the new .41Magnum firearms and ammo. Keep it up manufacturers!!!;)

As a P.S., I'd like to see a heavy GD for hunting, too. A good bonded core 250grJHP would be nice. I'd also like to see one in 165gr. to shoot in my .41AEs and .41Avenger. I mean why not wish it while we're on a role here, eh?

This ammo was announced in January.

It looks like it will be a good load for hunting.

I still haven't been able to find a distributor that has received any though.

It looks like Speer is busy playing catch-up with the orders for the 135gr .38 Special Gold Dot.

I just wish that someone would come out with a nice big hollow point at a moderate velocity for self defense use.

Ya, there's three new Gold Dots tuned for revolver use that really look good.

The 41 is one, the new 135grain 38+P another, and the third is a 250grain low-speed big-hollowpoint 45LC load that has real potential as "the best moderate-power self defense load ever". Which is saying a LOT but...at around 900fps it'll be controllable, it'll expand fast (it's the 135, "supersized") and with 250 grains weight it'll punch plenty deep enough. Will it rival the 10mm 155grain Gold Dot for overall effectiveness? Dunno. But I suspect it'll come damned close and it *might* actually top it.

I've been handloading the 41 Mag for years and a big yawn is all I get out of it. The XTP is a great bullet which I like and try on some of the Cast Performance 250 graines for size, those are my Brown Bear loads using 20 grains of H110. Not I'm not ragging on the golden dot it's a good bullet but compared to the XTP, which I KNOW is a good bullet it would be hard for me to switch. This summer I'm going to try and take a mountain goat with a 210 grain XTP using 21 grains of H110 out of my 41 mag ruger blackhawk. But if you don't reload then it would be a welcome change to the factory stuff.

XTPs are just so good it's hard to get excited about it.
That being said, more different kinds of ammo for the mighty .41 is a good thing. ;)

I've been using the speer 200gr HJHP @ 1200 for a self defense load.

With this new 210 GD slug I'm going to try loading it up to 1100.

Could be better: Less recoil, and preformance as a carry load should be exellent.

But as others have posted, for heavy/fast(up around the 15-1600 mark) I'll keep using either the 210 XTP or the speer 220 HJSP.
