Ok I know that the standard barrel limit for shotguns in the US is 18 inches (measured from the breach to the end of the barrel) and up is fine and anything under that is an SBS.

It is also understood that a muzzle brake or flash hider PERMANENTLY attached then it counts as barrel length. Permanent attachment has been discussed quiet a few times. What I haven't seen discussed is what counts as a flash hider or muzzle brake.

Is it pretty much anything welded on the end of the barrel that brings it up to the magical 18 inches or are there specific properties that make it a muzzle brake or flash hider. How much of the diameter of the bore must be encircled by this device for it to count or would it still be an SBS?

What i'm getting at is pretty impractical and useless really but if one was to cut a barrel to say 12 inches and then weld some spikes (3 or 4 around the diameter of the barrel) protruding out from the barrel forward to bring it up past 18 would that count? If 3 or 4 spikes count, would 2, how about 1, how about an old spike bayonet cut down and welded onto barrel?

How about the attached image something like that but welded in the extended position and to barrel. Tho I was thinking something smaller and less bulky

It can be a piece of pipe or whatever you want. Doesn't have to be any specific kind of muzzle device. I don't even believe there would be any legal problem with the goofy thing in your photo.

You might want to submit your question in writing to the Tech Branch before you did something as radical as that, though.

That's the most over-kill mole trap I've ever seen! Should do the trick, though!
