I know the barrel OAL for shotguns is 18", and the OAL for the gun itself is 26", but do muzzle brakes that are permanently attached apply the same as with rifles?

I have a J.C. Higgins 12ga with a muzzle brake, and I was wondering if I can cut it down to the mag tube and permanently attach the muzzle brake? The barrel is 22" from the bolt face to the muzzle brake, and the brake is 4.5" long. I was thinking that if it applies the same that I would like to cut the barrel to about 14.5" and have it recrowned and have the muzzle brake welded on... Is that permitted without violating NFA?

Thanks much. I wasn't sure if the muzzle devices were considered the same way with shotguns as with rifles. How can I find the relevant section in the ATF regulations or whatever?

www.google.com

Seriously, though...

The ATF procedure for measuring barrel length is to measure from the closed bolt (or breech-face) to
the furthermost end of the barrel or permanently attached muzzle device. Permanent methods of
attachment include full-fusion gas or electric steel-seam welding, high-temperature (1100°F) silver
soldering, or blind pinning with the pin head welded over. Barrels are measured by inserting a dowel rod
into the barrel until the rod stops against the bolt or breech-face. The rod is then marked at the
furthermost end of the barrel or permanently attached muzzle device, withdrawn from the barrel, and
measured.

Hey NavyLT, good answer though about as useless as mammary glands on a boar... Perhaps I should have posed my question with a bit more specificity. Where on the BATFE or other government website can I find the relevant rule, regulation, or statute? Google only gets you so far, and primary google responses on the inquiry result in this and similar threads on this and similar forums.

*on edit: Thanks for the link and quote, I don't know why I was missing it, I've looked at the linked document 4 times in the past 2 days lol.

You must have replied based on an email update to this thread that read "www.google.com" :D

Well, to give myself a little credit, it still hadn't been fixed when I started typing my response, I just got distracted and it took me awhile to click submit

I'm excited today though, not only did my parts for my saiga conversion get here today (neighbor got them yesterday ... I hate when we have substitute mailmen) but my father in law gave me $100 which will pay for my extended safety for my 1911, as well as a replacement stock for my J.C. Higgins 12ga and the fee to have it cut down and the muzzle brake re-welded.

Good times are in the near future... Ever see someone run a 3gun match with an officer frame 1911 as his pistol? :what:
