I have a commie fixed sight semi-auto that I keep in my truck a lot. It became very rainy yesterday so I decided to check on it. The rear sight blade which is in a small doveltail was completely covered in rust. The sight cleaned up easily with no apparent damage. I have the blade and slide soaking heavily with Shooter's Choice Rust Prevent. I am trying to get the Rust Prevent to creep into the slot between the blade and dovetail to kill what may be there.
I had this type of problem before with this gun. The blade is well blued. This has me to wondering if this is really rust. It is very small localized spot just on the rear sight blade. I found another interesting spot on the inside of the slide under the ejection port. This spot is both on the inside of the side and on the side of the barrel. It rubbed off easily with a cotton Q-tip.
If it is rust on the inside of the slide gun oil isn't protecting it. I keep the rails lubed with Tetra Gun Grease and usually wiped thin layer on the inside of the slide.
Ideas and treatment?
