Is it safe for us to carry right now?

Actually, I'm having the opposite feeling right now. I feel as though I need to be carrying at every practical moment. I invested a good deal of money and time in order to be able to carry and recent events tell me I need to make sure I get a maximum return. But in general, I haven't detected any change in attitudes towards firearms...those that don't like them, still don't. Nothing new.

It is not permitted for me to carry at work, as I work in a state building. However I'm in a pretty safe environment considering that the men I work for all carry sidearms. As for fearing reprisol or some sort of panic because of my choice to carry a weapon, I haven't felt any anxiety. People who are uncomfortable around guns, are going to continue to be and atleast here in WV most people who aren't firearm friendly are considered the lunatic fringe

Nah, nothing's really changed for me.

Except that more people, especially at work, are asking me about carrying concealed, i.e. what to do, how much it costs, what type of gun, etc. It's OK with me because I get to talk guns more.

I put mine on before I unlock and disarm the house in the morning and don't take it off until the exact oppisite has been done at night. The only thing I feel differently is now I am considering getting out one of my "mouse guns" as someone put it and stashing it in my back pocket for backup purposes, never thought I'd need a backup to my XD40 sub but the way this weeks been you never know.

all this just

gives me more reason to get my permit to CCW; even if I can't carry in my work truck, I can have one close at hand in my personal truck. I live 40 minutes from work so even though it's not "right there when I need it", the off work times are covered. Anyway, we need to push sharing the events posted every month in the NRA mags. that show how personal encounters are equalized as Mr. Colt described. JMHO

A New Mindset

I always have a gun in my car, but this week I went out and bought one for full time pocket carry. Beretta Tomcat as a backup for my backup, a Kahr PM. I've had my carry permit for some time now, but until this week, I never carried full time. I barely notice it. It's a whole new mindset from now on. It's got to be part of my daily equipment, wallet, cell phone, gun(s). I might get an ankle holstster from Galco for the PM9.

I'm not going down without a fight.

Is it safe for us to carry right now?

Every time I turn on the news it becomes more and more clear that it isn't safe for me to NOT carry. Who knows, if I didn't carry I might end up cowering behind the stack of toilet paper when the next nut wanders into the local grocery. Times are too crazy and dangerous to not be prepared.

No one around here is in freak out mode. Just the opposite. Most of the conversations I've had have been "if teachers and students at VT had had their own guns this wouldn't have happened."

I carry all the time. It has become such a part of me that to not be carrying would be like not having my wallet or keys. I carry a compact 40 and generally people that don't know me would never know I am carrying. Concealed means just that. If they don't know it's there and you give them no reason to suspect......well no problem.

possum - entirely valid point.

On one hand, you'd give up your protection in favor of avoiding being possibly mistaken for somebody you're not and getting unwanted attention.

On the other, you take the risk and keep in mind that you're legal (assuming you are) and are within the law and your rights, but possibly risk being inconvenienced and maybe humiliated (if it were to go so far as ending up on the news).

Personally, if anybody has ever noticed that I was carrying, they certainly didn't tell me... and I have a pretty good feeling nobody has ever noticed.... but still - with all this media frenzy and worry about an upcoming "copy-cat" (I really don't think there will be), I guess you just have to do a cost benefit analysis in your mind.

I don't think I'm going to change anything.... but I just was wondering what everybody else was thinking about the subject.

Comanche55- what compact 40 out of curiosity?

I carry a G27 a lot, however I've been looking for something even more compact if possible. No Kahr PM, but maybe an MK... I don't know. What is your carry?

well, apparently according to a comment, I'm on the board too much. So now I'm confused. ;)

I'm not really stressed out about it.... just nervous.

Afterall, it was just a dream, but it got me thinking today about what was in the back of my mind for the last couple of days.

the way i look at ccw is no matter if you have a permit to carry or not be smart about it, doing ccw right and no one will know that you are carrying. they don't know then you won't draw any attention.

No change, I have carried for 30+ years and HAVE NEVER been made. What part of concealed do you folks not understand?

Same for me.

I feel that the media's intent is to print more and more stories about every little crime involving guns to scare people into thinking that banning them is a way to prevent future crimes, but for me it had the opposite effect. It was partly from reading about all the media stories that convinced me to get my CCL and carry whenever possible. It can happen to anyone, anywhere.

The media uproar lately just confirms both points to me.
