Not exactly a reloading question.

But does any one know if off the shelf Commercial Barrett 50 BMG loaded hotter or lighter then
Mil Surp Lake City 50 BMG.

The commercial BMG in question ls 661 gr.

When you get some chronograph figures, I'd like to see them if you please.
I still have a batch of Mitchell's Mouser 50 bmg ammo that I bought years ago. I runs at 3055 fps +/_ about 40 fps.

I still have about 180 rounds of this stuff in my ammo dump, but the 50 is going to fire this week end.

Dang, I have to ask.. are the bases stamped "Mitchell's Mausers"???

No the Box is labeled as seen, but the headstamp is just Mitchell 50BMG MVC-006L.JPG MVC-007L.JPG
As I recall they were loaded in Bosnia by Igman for Mitchell's Mauser. Igman usually has a 1K headstamp. This ammo has the most consistant velocity I have ever seen in 50 BMG ammo.
What Mitchell's was trying to prove at the time is unknown as they soon stopped supplying this ammo.
While Chronoing this ammo I remember shooting a hole in my buddies light difuzer support on his chrono. We never noticed it untill packing it away. Six inches lower and I'da Had'ta buy him a new chrono! :)
Funny, the brass does not look like a refinished stock nor do they brag about a secret German stash. :)

Many thanks, I love it, always liked how Mitchells branded their ammo, just never saw 50 BMG from them.. The box is nice also.. and I hate to ask but does anyone remember was Mitchell ammo more expensive than regular commercial ammo at the time??

Per a Mitchells back story for the ammo.. . I heard it was laying under the p38s that Interarms found in those German U-boat pens :)

Again thanks.. I do like their box art..

At the time I believe it was $2/round which is cheap for anything with Mitchell's Mauser's name on it. I shoulda' bought tons of it at the time. I believe other brands were about $40-$50 a box (10 rounds) at retail.
I reload this stuff for about $1.75/round as I bought cans of 50 ball and AP G.I. pulled bullets when they were available in order to become independent of the retailers. Prices on these bullets have gone up steeply and are no longer available in most places anymore.
Incendiary rounds (bullets) are still fairly cheap and abundant, but Smokey Bear gets P.O.'ed if you use them

I was fortunate enough to find an outlet store that had 5 boxes of 660gr and 3 boxes 750gr, 50% off retail 17.50 a box and when I wanted all he said 15.00 a box:):). I wanted more it is in a black box, I don't remember the name. The last time I bought some was black Friday and it was 17.95, 5 box limit so my wife and I bought a limit.
I had a friend who gave me 2 50cal cans of api but all we use that for is removing dead trees where we don't feel safe using a saw.

Rdntnkr: you are certainly fortunate. Do you have any left or have they all been shot up? Did you chrono any of em"??
As for bullets alone: Pat's Reloading and Wideners used to have fat quantities of G.I. bullets, but them days are past.( I am talking about the non incendiary bullets).
I am seriously thinking of having a 50 Whisper built for range fun. Sub sonic using spotter tracer bullets to destroy small targets like an artillery round.

I don't think my 50 was made to hit anything small, 4 cyl eng blocks don't stand a chance, small 4" or 5" trees jump when hit correctly, I was told to never shoot it without the muzzle break.
I still wonder sometimes why I bought it, I only shoot it once every yr or 2 and it is pricey to shoot and I enjoy shooting 30-06 more. Also it doesn't come close to fitting in a safe.

Never shoot it with out a muzzle break... you are lucky I am forced to never shoot mine without a Tripod

Even then I am forced to bring my Pooh sized Friends to shoot it to stop it from moving

And I thought it cost a lot to shoot mine:), after about 5 or 6 rounds my sinuses are going crazy and the grass is smoking beside the barrel.
I hope you were able to purchase a lot of linked ammo when it was cheap, does the (tar)-(black stuff) make your action dirty? I have one can that I removed the links but haven't shot them yet

The cost of shooting yours is the same as mine, all that matters is how long you stay at the range. Any of the links I have used has been clean, no tar.
But I pretty much only shoot Lake City in her.. I have not shot any non US ammo in her. Who made the Tar ammo.???

I don't remember, it came in a 50cal ammo can surplus for cheap, about 10yrs or so ago, back when 50cal cans of 30-06 was less than 100$ I bought some and one of the cans wound up with 50bmg in it and I didn't have one then, maybe that is why I bought it.

You know another thing it is much more physically harder/exhausting to shoot 50 BMG from the shoulder vs on a tripod. Your head is so much closer to the muzzle pressure and the firing chamber. Even if the shoulder arm is heavy and mounted to a bi-pod.. I.E like a Boys gun.. The shooters head is just so close to the action it takes a toll on the shooter.

When ever your digging into it I would love to see a photo of the headstamp

Both of you guyz have great pictures and I thank you for them. The Ma Deuce cost about as much as the last 4 cars I bought, but I should have gone in debt for one 20 years ago. My local gun dealer just sold his last year for $60K with tripod. All I have is my little LAR single shot. IT's still 32 pounds of fun at the range. I let everyone, that asks, shoot it for free. There are a lot of shooters that would like to say they shot one and I give them a chance to fulfill their dreams.
BTW I still have a can of Talon loaded linked AP that we bought back then for about $150. I wouldn't part with it today due to it's desirability.

Price always depends on the model, but you can get perfectly respectable transferable m2s for a lot less than that, and you can get some wonderful Semis for even less.. But more important are we going to get a photo of that LAR?? :)

But have you seen the price of the primers lately? The CCI#35 primers are running $200 for 500! You can't load ammo without primers.

I paid $0.45 each for the last batch of primers I bought. I still have quite a few left.

When I get some hollow points, I'll be able to take squirrels with it too.
