Is Scope Lapping necessary?

I line 120 degrees (60 degrees both ways from TDC/BDC) of both the base and the cap of the rings with 3M Vinyl electrical tape and trim off the excess with a razorblade/knife.

Then mount the scope, snug the caps, and sight into a mirror to get the rifle and cross-hairs plumb/vertical, loosening, adjusting, and snugging as needed. Then double-check by sighting an interior wall corner.

When plumb/vertical, lightly torque the caps and confirm plumb/vertical.

Then let the rifle sit for a day.

The Vinyl electrical tape will actually extrude out from underneath the rings.

Then, re-torque the caps to spec and you are done.

100% contact surface, and the scope will come right out if the caps are removed.
