As I was paying for my wife and I's Chipotle burritos this weekend the cashier looks at me as I put my wallet away and asks "Is that a BB gun you are wearing?" To which I chuckle and reply "No, why would I carry a BB gun, that would serve me no good?"

To that response she looked puzzled, and with my anticipation, she then asks "Oh, so you're a Cop?"

"No"

"Oh, then you're security?"

Again I just reply "No."

I then told her I carry for protection. To which my wife contributes "No he doesn't, he's just a CRAZY" :what: :cuss:

I don't think I've ever gone from being smiling and happy to having my stomach bottom out so fast. My wife was joking, and talks to that very cashier at least once a week when she gets me lunch, but to say something to that affect just blew me away, especially coming from my wife.

I quickly interjected a "No I'm not", and took the food to go sit down. I seriously didn't know what to say at that moment, to the cashier or my wife. After sitting down to eat though I made it clear that comments like that are best never said and tend to never help a situation. Sure it was in fun, but I don't know what the cashiers mind set was to the whole conversation, pre or post comment. :banghead:

If you're OCing, why not just say "no, it's a real gun" and leave it at that? Seems like you invited on more and more questions and comments by being coy and evasive.

If you post something on THR, somebody always has to ride you because they think they know better.

Nothing wrong with what he did there.

I personally would have handled the questioning the same way. Being "coy".... what you did was let the cashier put the information together herself in order to find her own conclusion. That is usually the way people are most understanding and learn the most.

I am sure it went something like this in the cashiers mind (some what satirical, but non the less true):
"hmmm he isn't a cop or security....
so this type of action must be legal....
He isn't commiting a crime with it.....
This isn't so bad"

and just like that there is one more person who moved 1 inch farther into reality. Beautiful.

I think it’s best to broaden people’s exposure to firearms and self protection; it should not be something that we shy away from when confronted. Education is my goal if someone is curious I enlighten them on the subject. But I can see where it raised concern for you in the given situation.

Well, I never would have done that...
No offense, but that was very stupid..
You should have gotten the fish tacos instead! :neener:

Seriously, I wasn't there, but it sounds like you and your wife both handled it well. I imagine the "he's crazy" part to be rather funny, but that's just how I would take it.

How about simply replying with "No, ma'am, it's not a BB gun... open carry of a handgun is legal in Utah"?

I don't OC because it seems like too much trouble (I CCW) so I don't know the ins and outs of OC, but seems like that might defuse some situations...

I would have answered it the same way. Just remember that most women *may include your wife* have a very different perspective. Don't let it get to ya.

Well, you're just stupid because nobody would eat at something owned by McDonald's.

Duh.

Yah, I was just immediately shocked thinking in an instant that the cashier might take my wife literally and call the cops because "there's a crazy guy with a gun".

Fortunately, we sat down for 45 minutes of eating and nothing happened.

As far as educating her goes, had she asked more questions past the usual "are you a cop/security" then I would have taken the time to explain it to her. It wasn't a busy lunch time, and I certainly wasn't in a hurry. But, I wasn't going to take up her time if she was no more interested. Like said, I'll let her draw her own conclusions. I'll OC in there more, and if she's more curious, then I'm more open to talk.

ETA: I've never known "No" to be coy or evasive. "No" is pretty definitive.

I have never been asked if the 1911 I was carying was a BB gun!:D
But I would have handled it the same way but after the last question about a security gaurd I would have sald you don't need to be law enforcement in this state to legally carry a real gun. I would not have said anything about protection, non gun poeple think we are paronoid if we say that I have found. So I just tell those who do ask, which are very very few, that it is perfectly legal for me to carry both open and CCW. I have even had some say NEAT! I might start dooing that. then ask how to get a CCW. Maybe made a few converts!

BTW the wifes comment was not good in any way, or funny. It could have gotton the real LEOs called on you by the clerk and a BIG misunderstanding which ended up with you answering a bunch of non needed questions! I would have grilled the wifee on that one!

McDonald's has no affiliation with Chipotle anymore, but thanks for playing.

Dang, when did that happen?

Oh well, if I want some greasebomb tacos, I know where to get them.

Reminds me of the time my wife and I went to our favorite Italian restaurant and ordered probably $60 worth of stuff. The waitress comes with the check and I give her the credit card. The waitress starts getting all pissy and says "there is a $25 limit to use a credit card, but I'll let it go this time". My wife starts to speak up "but we"... I kicked her under the table. I apologized profusely and left her a $10 tip, on our $19 bill!

Anyway, I would have been rolling on the floor laughing with what your wife said. Hopefully, my gun would not have fallen out of the holster while doing so, because I open carry as well.

"Is that a BB gun you are wearing?" To which I chuckle and reply "No, why would I carry a BB gun.."

That's great... This person was so out of touch w/ reality that she thought there was some chance someone would walk around w/ a BB gun on their belt!:banghead: You should have said yes, I keep it right here in case I come across some sody cans!!!:neener:

I think the problem here is with the wifey, not the OP. She's clearly antagonistic to the idea of self-defense. Just another blissninny who will instantly become a conservative on this issue the day she is mugged. Hopefully she will see the light. But that was a pretty crappy thing for her to say.
You should have said yes, I keep in right here in case I come across some sody cans!!

Yes, that would have been classic! :D

Another case of somebody jumping on an individual with false assumptions when the man said his wife made the comment in jest.

Nowhere in the OP did he say that she's "antagonistic to the idea of self-defense."

Got a little bit of sexism in you, son?

Never thought I'd be the one with the stick up my butt, but some of ya'll need to read through everything before you let loose with the cannons.

Thanks TxState.

Premium Sauces, Yes, my wife was jokeing. I realized this then, however how was I supposed to know how the cashier was taking that comment? That was my point that I very carefully explained to her as we ate. I thought I made it clear in my typing too.

I also take your comments very offensive. My wife has expressed the want to get her CFP as well. She is all about ones responsibility to protect themselves.

I'm sure it was a conditioned state of "no one really carry's guns...do they? so it must be a toy" Any form of self-thought would allow one to come to the conclusion that it must be real. But, thats rare form this day in age.

sorry i just LOL'ed, i would have just looked oddly at the cashier and walked off with my food.

why be so up tight, you are OC'n so you then clearly dont mind people staring or saying things.

My wife would probably have said something similar. And I guess it is also because she is clearly antagonistic to the idea of self-defense that I had to buy her a Glock 27 to carry because the PT145 that I bought her a few weeks earlier kept jamming on her.

And I also think the OP's answers to the questions were appropriate. I am not going to bother to explain all the laws to someone unless they show an interest in hearing about it.

Is that a real gun? Yes.
Are you a cop? No.
Shouldn't it be concealed? No.

You really need to have a talk with your wife. My female friend used to do the same **** the first couple years I carried, but she learned quickly I wasn't allowing any comments like that any more. As a matter of fact, she OC'ed for the first time the other night and I suspect it gave her a fresh perspective about what I go through.

It's unacceptable to make comments like that.

As I was paying for my wife and I's Chipotle burritos this weekend...

The way to check a sentence like that is to ask yourself "If I removed the other person/people from the sentence, how would it sound?"; ie. "As I was paying for I's Chipotle burrito..." This is obviously silly, so tells you that you need to try something different. There are several technically correct ways to say what you were trying to say within the framework you used, but none are very pleasing to the eye. I would suggest you revamp the sentence entirely; something along the lines of "As I was paying for the burritos that my wife and I ordered..." But of course matters of style are always very individual. I just hope to provide a few options for you to consider, should such an issue present itself again at some future date.

Oh, the thread? Uh, what thread?
