Most people love the M&P yet I heve herd many bad things about smith auto's expecially the sigma. Is there a big difference? Will Smith really fix anything that breaks for the life of the gun?
the first Sigma was smiths attempt at the polymer pistol. the early models were less than perfect. the newest models are shunned due to the Sigma's Stigma. also they are an economy pistol. perfectly functional, but for 250$ with 4 mags dont expect much. glock clone, no external safety
the new M&P is better built. external safety. better feel in my opinion. its also close to double the Sigma's price.
smith also maked a few other polymer and a large number of metal frame autos.
some of these were not so warmly welcomed, some are classics with proud historys, such as the Model 59, and thier .22 the Model 41
i have ever liked smith autos until the m7p came out. yes i like the s&w 99 but igive the credit for that to walther, and by the way i like the p99's. the
m&p is much better in the feel, trigger pull departmen, and i am sure since the feel and trigger is so much nicer and grip is customizable the end user would be more apt to shoot better with it.
Every Smith auto I've owned has been flawless. Starting from the 4006 to the 1006 to the 4516 to the M&P 40. I would have no hesitation in recommending a Smith and Wesson semi auto. God I wish I still had that 1006.
So far, I think it is only on the .45, possibly because S&W would like to sell the .45 M&P to the military, and they like the manual safety. If it seems to be liked, look for S&W to put it on their other M&Ps or offer it as an option.
I think the steel second and third generation Smith and Wesson automatics were great pistols. I own two of them and and am seriously considering more. I have shot a .40 M&P next to the old original .40 4006, and I will take the 4006 any day over the tuperware M&P due to the 4006's ability to handle recoil.
Another great S&W I once owned was the .45ACP 645. It was a fantastic gun, and I wish I had never sold it. I might pick up another one if I can find one used.
Smith's M&P and 1911's are their best centerfire autos, except perhaps for some PC models and the 945/952 series. All the DA types had terrible triggers, which is why I've never met a shooter in my area who has one.
